Convenient, cheap, safe
Next to the station exit is the Jinan Railway Hotel, where you can get a decent room for RMB268 per night.
Usual 3-star qualities in the room: TV, hot water, good lighting, comfortable bed.
Unique Quality: A significant downside is that the hotel business centre was utterly useless and unhelpful getting an onward train ticket for me. They knew I was only in one town for one day, but wouldn't help me get a ticket (I was willing to pay for someone to get it for me), so I spent the first half of my day getting my train ticket.
Coffee shop served good coffee, which is not common in China!
Note that there are two other hotels in the same square. The China Postal Hotel is at the eastern end of the square, 100m from the station, but you don't need to cross any roads to get there.
