"Qingdao"

I visited China in October 2007 as a part of a delegation of one of our shipping companies, to attend the opening of large cold store there. We stayed at the beautiful Shangri-La hotel for 3 nights (see my tip).

"Qingdao"

The beautiful ball on top of this building constantly changed colours, making it a mesmerizing sight. This building is opposite the Shangri-La hotel. As I hadn't started on VT until later in October 2007 I have no photos of inside the hotel and very few photos without people in them.

We were staying in the most fashionable street with a lot classy hotels of brand-name stores and close to Wusi square (see my main photo) so this area wasn't what you might call cheap in China and the prices were pretty much the same as here in Iceland. One day we went to a whole different area of Quingdao where there was an indoor market selling fake brand-names of all sorts. I include photos of that area in a travelogue so you can see the difference in wealth in Quingdao. In that area were also The Communist run stores, which were immaculate, but the atmosphere was really cold. We had the hardest time getting back to the hotel as there was absolutely no taxi which was not occupied and we were getting really desperate, it was getting dark and the traffic was like something I had never seen before. We were finally able to hitch a ride on a taxi with a passenger which took us for a big detour of the city to drop the passenger off.

Hardly anyone spoke English there, apart from the hotel staff and one young shop-assistant in one store.

There was so much smog and humidity in October that most of the photos taken outside are blurred.
