May Fourth Square
The May Fourth Square, which was named after the May Fourth Movement in 1919, is a famous square in Qingdao covering an area of 100,000 square meters. It is located between the new municipal government building and Fushan bay. The square is marked by an interesting red torch-like sculpture called "The Wind in May". Adjacent to the square in Fushan bay will be the site of several 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic events including sailing. There are souvenir stands along the long pedestrian walkway along the beach.
Qingdao actually is a town inside the province of Shandong. It is also called as 'Eastern Switzerland'. It was once a colony belonged to Germany. There was an old castle on a hill that facing the sea and it's a distance not far away from the symbolic bridge called 'ZhanQiao'(Have you ever drank the beer made by Qingdao? Look at the trade mark). If it was a peak season for people to get married, you will find many couples strolling at the seaside which they believe by walking with holding each other's hand will bring them good luck and prolong their marriage until their days are numbered.
You must be wondering why there is a peak season to get married, you see, many Chinese still follow the tradition of living each day by checking the Lunar Calender whether today is a good day to shift house, to get married, to be burried, to locate furniture & fittings or even to get shaved! Of course, many modern Chinese do not practice that anymore, but when it comes to elderly people, if you respect them, pls say yes, otherwise, you won't have a chance to marry their daughter!
Let's come back to Qingdao, do try the seafood restaurant alongside the town, especially the dumpling called 'jiaozhi' which has a variety of ingredients in it.
