Good location for Laishan industrial area/ airport

Stayed 3 days in March 2011. I would generally agree with the 2010 review by calif0rniadreaming; the property does not deserve a 5 star rating. That said it has some pluses as well.
Location: In the center of the Laishan industrial district, about 10 minutes from the airport. This made it convenient for me on business. The location is less convenient if your actual destination is the "downtown" district - about 20 - 30 minute cab ride away. The previous review is correct; there are no tourist friendly sites anywhere in walking distance. A few shops can be found across the street... most carrying building products: hardware, windows, electrical suppliers, etc. There is a small convenience store with snacks, drinks and limited groceries.

Service: Bell staff, front desk, and restaurant/ bar staff were uniformly helpful and eager to serve. Their English skill level is modest; those without any Chinese language skill had better have, and use, a good phrasebook. I have "survival Chinese" level Mandarin and found this sufficient. The "recreation center" staff was responsible for the pool, exercise room... and the massage activity. I won't disagree with the earlier review on this particular department, although I did use the pool - 25 m lap pool, clean and good condition.

Property/ maintenance status: All items in the room were in good working order, but the decor
was tired (carpets, curtains, etc.) Common areas were tidy, though also somewhat dated. One exception: there is an "executive bar", open to all as far as I could tell, which was quite attractively appointed.

Access as a Ramada property makes reservations easy to do for English speakers; relatively few other properties in the city have this convenience.

Overall I would rate the property as a 3 star, with an A for effort by individual staff.

Unique Quality: US Franchise and therefore convenient to reserve for English speakers
Convenient location for Airport - 10 minutes away by cab
Staff very friendly and eager to serve

Travel Tips for Yantai

Mazu Patron Saint of Seamen

by urban4est

In Downtown Yantai there is a small museum that is an old temple dedicated to Mazu. It contains information about her, archeological exhibitions and the stage for the traditional Mazu celebration. At one end is a crystal and rock store with some interesting pieces. The building itself encloses a court yard and the outer walls of the structure make a walled enclosure hiding its contents. The Altar/Stage was carved in Fujian and brought to Yantai by ship.

So who is Mazu?
(the following was found on yourencyclopedia.com)

According to legend, Lin Muoniang was born in 960 (during the early Northern Song Dynasty) as the seventh daughter of Lin Yuan on Meizhou Island, Fujian. She did not cry when she was born, and thus her given name means "Silent Girl."

There are many legends about her and the sea.

Although she started swimming relatively late at the age of 15, she soon became an excellent swimmer. She wore red standing on the shore to guide fishing boats home, even in the most dangerous and harsh weather.
