Holiday Inn Downtown: Near the Railway Station
The hotel rooms are clean, spacious enough, adequately furnished (with TV, free bottle of water/toiletries each day of your stay) and the wait staff friendly especially the concierge. I always ask the concierge to write the Chinese characters of the places where I want to go.
The rooms come with free buffet breakfast (rice, maki, dimsum, noodles, bread, jams, eggs, cold cuts, vegetables and tropical fruits) at Yue Garden (2/F).
Don't be confused though as the hotel has two buildings separated by a walkway leading to the Shanghai Railway Station. I stayed in the Great Wall Wing.
Behind Holiday Inn is the Shanghai Railway station (useful for going to Suzhou and Beijing etc.) and on the ground floor is Kentucky Fried Chicken for us Western food eaters.
It's in the old part of town though so it's a bit crowded outside especially during holidays when local tourists flock the railway station.

Astor House Hotel: The room was bigger than a house
I was more concerned with location than price when I was looking for a hotel in Shanghai and settled on the Astor House because it was right on The Bund and only a couple blocks from the international ferry docks. This turned out to be a huge timesaver because my ferry was delayed by 12 hours and I didn't get out of the ferry terminal until midnight. The Astor House was only a 14 RMB taxi ride away from the port terminal.
I was tired and wet, so when the front desk demanded I give them an extra 200 RMB deposit, I was annoyed and didn't like them so much. I only had enough money on me to cover the room cost and it was too late to get more cash. It's not a big deal, only a deposit, but their website didn't mention anything about that so it made me feel unprepared.
Hidden costs always leave a bad taste in my mouth, like eggs. The service in the restaurant was excellent and the breakfast buffet is amazing, the chef even made an egg just for me because I hadn't gone over to get one. I despise eggs, but if you're into them, there's a chef at the breakfast buffet dying to make you one. I hid the egg behind a pillar so he wouldn't see I'd ditched it.
It's an old building with a maze of hallways. Walking along the hallways, it looks like the place is about to fall apart, but the rooms are spotless and very modern. The contrast works well.

Shanghai Conservatory of Music Guesthouse: Shanghai Conservatory of Music Guesthouse
Currently closed at the moment. If open, only the 300 RMB rooms are left. Be warned that the entire school campus is under major reconstruction though.
The restaurant on the 1st floor is still open.

Shanghai Classical Hotel: Shanghai Classical Hotel
Our stay at the Shanghai Classical Hotel April 1 to 3/06 was great. Its located in the YuYuan garden Tourist area and is better known locally for its popular restaurant that has been in business for over a century. A short walk to the Yu garden and nearby $hopping allowed us to get there early before the crowds. We were also able to walk about 2km to the Bund - taxi`s were also readily available and cheap-- however drivers are only familar with its local name Lao Fandian. Staff spoke a bit of english however take a phrase book. The standard size room was comforable and clean with traditional decor. There is a local style breakfast - rice congee, steamed buns- included in the room rate and we enjoyed it. There is also Starbucks in the lobby and a McDonalds across the road for those who need a fix.
Traditional style building,

Summit Service Apartment: What a difference a little month makes
As the name implies this is a unique accommodation option. This place is basically a serviced apartment building, you have all the services and amenities you would expect in a hotel, plus a full kitchen. For the first time I stayed at the suite called Suite A which basically consits of a room with two double beds, a spacious living room with den and an open kitchen. The suite was nicely decorated, wood flooring in the living room, carpet in the bedroom. Having a seperate living area in your "hotel room" dissolves the thick air of a hotel environment. Thumbs up.
The second time I stayed at the Superior Room, two bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. Things seemed a little bit upside down this time though. The kitchen had a thick layer of grease everywhere, even the ceiling panels. The carpet was stained in the bedrooms, and there was a thick layer of dust on all the furniture. Not good.....I don't know what happened within a month, but for the next time I am looking for somewhere else. Thumbs down.
The 34th floor bar has a great 360 degrees view of Shanghai. I finally had my annual workout session last night in the gym. Nice view, real nice, 33rd floor and time really flies by watching the city. It was big enough 4 treadmills, 2 elliptical, two bikes and all the other stuff (shopping is my real cardio). Beware internet access is subject to surcharge which adds up to a great sum by the end of an extended stay.

PuDong Shangri-La: Great View of Shanghai
Well, what can I say about this hotel... this was pretty much all I got to see of Shanghai for 3 days. We got into the city at 10pm, had to take a technical test, then spent the rest of the time in lectures, getting a few minutes at a time to look around.
The hotel has some great restaurants, really delicious food, and even the catering was nice. The rooms were very nice, and definitely on par with the Hiltons and Hyatts of the world.
The bed was very comfortable, and they provided free bottled water which put it high on my list!

The full name of the hotel is "Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center International Hotel". This is a big and comfortable hotel in the Cao Bao Road area with good convention and exhibition facilities if you decide to hotel these events in Shanghai. There is also a very impressive sports centre in the hotel, with a nice indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, badminton courts, table tennis, gym etc etc.

Park Hotel: Park Hotel
Good location, between the Bund and the shopping district. Good service and nice rooms. Dun be fooled by the exterior, cos the exterior can look really old. It's a historical building anyway. Get to the 1st flr to view it's historical fotos! It was the highest hotel along Nanjingxilu during that period of time. Nice breakfast too.
