Very nice place in a leafy area
This hotel is for anyone looking for a decent place with class and good facilities.
Unique Quality: It's location in a villa area with lots of trees and parks let's one forget it being in Shanghai.
Safe area also to walk at night, if you know your way.

Calm luxurious retreat in old part of Shanghai
This hotel is in a perfectly calm and fascinating neighbourhood. You hear here birds singing and people playing piano in bourgeous-style city houses, and you also find still many small original chinese "Garage-homeworker-shops". On the block wich is formed by the Anting hotel in the center and the Hangshen metro station at the other corner, at one corner you will get 8 wonderful homemade dumplings for 5 Yuan, at the next corner you will find a European style Garden restaurant with small candles on the tables in a real big garden, on the next corner you will find a Chinese person in a small watchman house looking at the street (I think some relict of old times), and at the fourth corner you will get wonderful grilled sticks for 2 Yuan each - especially also vegetable sticks from some central asian looking people with turk-style accent - really a very fascinating quarter here!
Some people write in reviews, that it is a bit outside the city, but I did not feel this - it is only 200-300m from the Line1 metro station, there usually every 1-5 minutes a train will take you into the city. But it is not too far to walk to the People's Square (=city center). At least until South Shanxi road / Music university it is a nice 30-40min walk passing by very interesting looking bars (as it is to be expected for a quarter which leads to the music university where Lang Lang has his roots). The music university contains the very nice He Luting concert hall (with a very hidden ticket office - you will need to ask students to find it).
For Shanghai citizens the part around HengShan Metro station is called "romatic Shanghai" - it seems to be somehow protected against the construction-destruction - all the roads are lined with wonderful big trees.
Unique Quality: Garden, calm rooms, Internet connection in the room (costs 90 Yuan per day) - unfortunately no bicycle rent (somewhere in Internet it was stated that they rent bicycles). Staff speaks good English.

an awful experince staying here,quiet but neighbors a busy bar street Hengshan Road.
Unique Quality: one of the best dining places in Shanghai --Mingxuan (Noble House) is residented in the no.1 house of the villa. compared to its luxury the dinning hall of the hotel provides more reasonalbe priced but also tasty shanghainese dishes.
daily life of Shanghai i.e. the local residence can be viewed from the balcony of each room.
it's also an ideal place to hold a workshop-not expensive rental fee for a meeting room with good service.
