comfortable and convenient

Huaiyang style and Szechuen style food are very delicious.

Unique Quality: It's very near to the Bund and Nanjing Road, financial & shopping center. Over the past 150 years, Astor House Hotel retains its glorious architectural essence, and helps to epitomize the historical nature of the city of Shanghai.

Historic Alternative

Astor House Hotel has character being the first “European” type hotel built in 1846. There are many types of bedrooms. You might want to visit one first to view the situation and road noise conditions. The “Executive” style room I had faced Huang Pu Road and the Russian Consulate. It was large and clean. The hotel and rooms have been mostly restored. The lobby and main hall as a movie set for two days. Rooms in the back wing where some of the historic rooms are will also get you creaky wooden floors. My room had a very nice bathroom that used Kolher fixtures. The room had appropriate furnishings.

I found the staff courteous, friendly, and generally spoke reasonably good English

The buffet breakfast served western and chinese style foods. It was very good. Take a look at the original wood flooring in the main hall or second floor ballroom. I’ve never seen anything like it.

The hotel has several restaurant and bars. There are staffed business centered on the floors that face Huang Pu Road.

The hotel is one block off the Bund via the Garden Bridge. Currently the Bund is one large construction zone for Expo 2010. It should be a good location for those visiting Expo 2010.

Unique Quality: Large restored rooms
Good breakfast buffet

PU JIANG HOTEL

Astor House Hotel was established in 1846 (during the Qing Dynasty Daoguang period, 26 years) and was one of China's first hotels to be built by a Westerner. Originally called Richard's Hotel, it became known as the Astor House Hotel, which was eventually restored in 1907 to a neo-classic Baroque hotel, making it once again the most deluxe western hotel in the city. Over the past 150 years, Astor House Hotel retains its glorious architectural essence, and helps to epitomize the historical nature of the city of Shanghai.

Unique Quality: Now known as Pujiang Hotel, it still retains its wonderful architectural essence even after 150 years of history. Recently renovated, the rooms are extremely spacious, with large western-style bathrooms, decorated very nicely with Victorian and Baroque touches.

Most interesting hotel in Shanghai.

We stayed at the Astor House for 12 nights over Christmas and New Year. The place was an absolute delight despite the incessant Christmas carols sung by what sounded like children being tortured that played over and over. Breakfast was included and the buffet each morning provided ample choice. The room itself was a generous size and was, thankfully, very warm. We enjoyed a view of the Bund and if I leaned out of the window far enough, I could see the Orient Pearl Tower. A comfortable and extremely pleasant hotel made all the better by it's old-world charm. It's crowning glory was Morning Shanghai, the restaurant on the firts floor. A spectacular and grand room boasting a very reasonably priced Chinese and Western menu. We didn't bother with the Western menu as the Chinese dishes were simply delicious. One of the best restaurants we experinced in Shanghai.

Unique Quality: The oldest western style hotel in China, built in 1846.

A comfortable, convenient old hotel

Our guidebook described this hotel as a backpacker favorite. Perhaps, but we three got a very spacious and comfortable room at a good price. The location was great, just at the north end of the Bund. This photo was taken from the hallway. Our room was a few doors down from where Charlie Chaplin once stayed. It is also called the Pujiang.

Unique Quality: One of the last of the many grand old hotels that once graced the Shanghai waterfront.

Univited Guests eh

Generally a good hotel (location and value for money) which was sadly let down when we found a rat in our room. When we reported this to the manager he thought it funny - he laughed, I'm not sure whether through mirth or embarrassment. I think the manager's attitude was far worse than the rat itself, however. I can't therefore recommend this hotel.

Cool, Historic Hotel-Great Location!!

I stayed in a business class room at the Astor Hotel (Pu Jiang Fan Dian) in October, 2005. I got a good room price through www.asiatravel.com. I couldn't have been more pleased. The room was spacious. I was staying for a week and there was plenty of room to unpack and put everything in a closet, cabinet or drawer--including my luggage. I loved the natural wood floors which I feel are cleaner than hotel carpeting. The room had a queen-sized bed, a sofa, a desk complete with a computer and fax machine, a TV with CNN, and a refrigerator. The bed and pillows were comfortable. The bathroom was gorgeous. It was done with black granite, marble, glass and Kohler fixtures. The breakfast provided in the morning was not outstanding, but there was variety and I never left hungry. The desk staff on the business floor was friendly and always willing to try their best to help. Parts of the hotel have not been renovated and cater to backpackers.

Unique Quality: The location of this hotel is excellent. From the hotel I could walk down the Bund, and over to NanJing Road for shopping and restaurants. You don't have a view of the river from the hotel (maybe one or two rooms, I don't know), but you can walk half a block and enjoy it. I was looking for a hotel with history rather than something gleaming new and glitzy. If you read some Shanghai history before you stay here, you will appreciate the hotel and location even more.

Astor house hotel review

I booked this hotel through www.sinohotel.com. This is actually a hostel. Me and my sis stayed in a private room. The bathroom and room was clean. The front desk would write out the name of our destinations in chinese. This hotel is like a min walk from the bund. The location is good and it is well known to taxi drivers. I had to stay in a different hotel in shanghai due to a delay in my flight to india. The hotel provided by the airlines was absoultuely disgusting and had roaches everywhere. This hotel may not be fancy but it is clean. So if your just looking for a place to crash keep it in mind.

Unique Quality: The best part about this hotel is that it is familiar to taxi drivers and is walking distance to many of the main attractions.

Astor House Hotel

by bit7er_reali7y

Hi I'm hoping someone can help me out...

I was reading through the hotel reviews and all the postings for the Astor House Hotel indicate the price should be around 20-40$/night, however when I goto the website to book it's quite a bit more expensive. Does anyone know if they've raised the price or, is this incorrect on the website and they still have basic rooms for 20-40 dollars / night,

Thanks!

I don't think you may book this hotel at $40/night,at least $70/night.
