Well, pretty much the only way...

Well, pretty much the only way from the states is to fly. They did have some cruise ships in the harbor, but I don't know if they travel internationally. The flight from New York is 21 hours out and 19 hours back, not fun.
Taxis are plentiful and cheap.
The Bund at Night
by Ash59
The Bund and the surrounding area is aglow at night, as you can see. This picture was taken from the top of the Peace Hotel, where we stayed.
However, you can visit the roof of the hotel without staying there to take in the wonderful view. You can even get a cocktail or a beer while you play at being a tourist!
Shanghai Art Museum
by cheezecake_deli
The Shanghai Art Museum is housed in the old Race Club building, distinguished by its trademark clock tower, just north of People's Park on Nanjing West Road (Nanjing Xi Lu). Its interior has been sensitively restored, and there are 4-5 floors of exhibits.
I was lucky to be in town during the 2006 Biennale - there were interesting exhibits from both local and international artists. Although there were signs everywhere forbidding photography, almost every visitor was snapping away and the guards made no attempt to stop this!
There is a restaurant on the roof (Kathleen's 5), with panoramic views across town, as well as a well-stocked shop on the ground floor selling art books (in English and Chinese).
Shanghai Views

I happened to be there when history was in the making. The Tianamen Square thing was happening and this is a view down one of the streets in Shanghai during those turbulent days. I've never seen so many people in one spot but then again there are over a billion Chinese.
