The Bund and the bank of...
by Jiang_Cucha
The Bund and the bank of Huangpu River The Bund, which extends from Jinling Road in the south to the Waibaidu Bridge over the Suzhou Creek in the north, is on the western bank of the Huangpu River. It is a 1.5-kilometer boulevard and used to be called the Huangpu Shoal. It used to be a 10-meter-wide boulevard lined with canopy-like sycamores. Cedars, cassias, and camphor trees made the street green all the year round. Flower beds were always in blossoms. Now it becomes the favored place for the tourists to tarry and enjoy the river scene and cultural activities going on along the Bund. Walking up to the dam, you will be fascinated by the sight of forest of masts, the glittering waves, the impressive skyline, and shadowy trees interlacing with beautiful flowers. It is just like a magnificent scroll.
Luxury and Young Fashion
by nomadig about Citic Square
Citic Square mall shops are either targeted for those of us with thick wallet or desire for youngful attires. The bottom floors have several upscale boutiques to get rid of all your money, such as Bally, Kenzo, MaxMara, Trussardi and Armani Exchange.
On the upper levels, you can find several stores specialising in young fashion. Miss Sixty is one example, and there are several Chinese and Asian brands, too. Victorinox has a small outlet here as well, and it can come handy if you'd need to purchase a multipurpose tool or excellent luggage. There are a few restaurants in the mall, too.
Chinese Restaurant in a Refurbished Home
by gaolei about Secret Garden Restaurant
Since the opening of Xin Tian Di, peoples' eyes have been opened to the posibilities of restoring some of the old houses of Shanghai. The Secret Garden is one of these new restaurants in a beautifully restored house.
This is an upscale Chinese restaurant in a beautifully restored house that is full of local antiques. The food is good, the prices are a little high and there is an English menu. A great place for that special dinner that's intended to impress someone. The steamed rice in an individual bamboo steamer is one of my favorites. The Tsai Shin is always a favorite, but here it was especially good.
The Modern Develoment
by travelpug
Pudong area in Shanghai is like a economic miracle. The whole area east of Huangpu river was developed in less than 20 years. Today, a few tallest buildings in the world are located in Pudong area. When standing at the Bund (the older part of Shanghai) and look across, you can really admire the skyline of Pudong area. I couldn't believe I was in a so-called communist country!!
RIGHT NOW.. .DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY....

"THIS CITY IS HUGE..."
I feel like the person from the country side who visits the big city for the first time.... which way to go?, so many people, the noise, the different accents... this is how I felt when exiting the metro (line 2 - Henan Zhong Lu stop) right on Nanjing Rd - major commercial thoroughfare....
My hotel - 7th Heaven Hotel has an excellent location (near the River, the Bund, Peace Hotel), right on Century Square... great value too -- 320 yuan per night -- clean, perfect room, not too noise, 14th floor, A/C....
holy cow... this is one beastie city... am I ever happy I will live in Dalian.....
arrived on nanjing Rd and thought i was in NYC's Chinatown... Louis Vuitton, Prada... oh beautiful... sunglasses... too much...
in Dalian, since arrival... I had not used buyao once.... here... in 5 hrs... I've said it more than 5 times every hr...... many times, I have not uttered one word, just lift my hand and they leave me alone, at least for now.....
-also impressive on the metro... two kids were begging... one man came screaming at them for about 1 minutes... real screams... I would have loved to understand what he said... the kids stopped begging and left the car immediately....
I will do Shanghai in small doses.... will be best....
one good thing..... I shall see the city from the eyes of a local... that will give me another perspective....
the buildings are amazing.... from people's sq. everywhere you look... mighty architecture...
obvious Shanghai is a clearing house for Chinese from everywhere... this is the big city, where the jobs are... thus, the contrasts and contradictions seem more obvious...
- rode the MAGLEV -- what a beauty... the 430 km/h it reaches, way cool.
"DAY 2"
The Naked City has something for everyone...
I still don't know what to think... don't know what I was expecting...
boat ride on the river is spectacular... the architecture is even more amazing from a distance....
Shanghai Museum rules... what a place... great gathering of what Chinese history is all about....
Fuzhou Rd... is awesome... great variety of people, more of a local taste...
"Left it...."
Got to see Luxun Park, Dun Lou St, some of the temples, more shopping areas...
what a vibrant city.... but I still did not get the feeling I get in Beijing....
the warmth of the people, link to history, the different neighborhoods, hutongs....
their race to modernism is obvious, they have done a fantastic job... in 15 years they have accomplished what Latin America has not done in 500 (like a good friend says)... and it is true....
Still, I will go back... more needs to be seen..
Loved getting lost around People's Square one night and finding the Marriott... visiting the lobby on a 38th floor, the view was incredible, full moon, clear night and a harpist playing "You are so beautiful" by Joe Cocker, a glass of a good Malbec from Argentina and how can you go wrong!!!
