Shanghai Mansions

Shanghai Mansions Very comfortable rooms, EXCELLENT view on the Bund and the Pudong - dazzling at night. Originally (and lately again) called Broadway Mansions, the building was constructed in the 1930s in Chicago Art-Deco style. During WWII it was used by American and later Japanese troops. Back in 1972 Richard Nixon viewed the panorama of the city from the hotel's observation terrace.

Broadway Mansions is a nineteen-floor Art Deco four star hotel which is one of the most famous hotels in Shanghai. Located near to the confluence of Suzhou Creek and Huangpu River, as well as the northern end of The Bund, it was built by the architectural and engineering firm of Palmer and Turner, and its completion in 1935 signalled the commencement of the high-rise building era in Asia. In fact it was the highest building in Shanghai until 1950. After it was built, the 9th floor was occupied by The Foreign Correspondents Club who used it to witness the Japanese bombings of Shanghai in 1937. The Japanese used the building as their headquarters during World War II.
The Bund - a symbol of imperialism? - Part 2

In the first half of the 20th Century, the levy was lower and the river less dredged, so the mudbanks were awash with all manner of trading vessels, and the big buildings were warehouses, banks, hotels, and trading exchanges. Not much has changed, except that the warehouses are long gone.
As a quick guide, from south to north, the key reference buildings are:
- Shanghai Pudong Development Bank (big cupola - ex-HSBC HQ)
- Shanghai Customs House (big clock tower)
- China Foreign Exchange Bank (small French white baroque building)
- Peace Hotel (green 'pyramid' dome - ex Cathay Hotel)
- Bank of China (huge slab-sided building next to Peace Hotel)
- Broadway Mansions (on north side of Suzhou Creek, looking down The Bund)
Many seem to suggest that the best view of The Bund is from the river, but I find that this is not true. The lower parts of the buildings are obscured by the huge concrete levy. Just walk up and down the street!

Renovations at Broadway Mansions Hotel
by hayward68
Does anyone know if the renovations are still ongoing at the Broadway Mansions Hotel? I just read a few reviews that said the banging starts around 6-6:30am and it's affecting some of the quality. We're looking for a decent hotel near the Bund as the hostels we wanted seem to be full the nights we need. If the construction is over then we might book at this hotel.
Thanks!
Laura

Hengsheng Peninsula International Hotel is near the bund, they have river-view rooms....i also lived 1 night at the Shanghai Chuangye Hotel, which is 3-minute walk to the Bund, but the views out of the windows are terrible... it is surrounded by the old resident buildings....
