hostel? I don't think so - it's better!

After going to a fully booked hostel, the staff managed to book us the last available room from Captain Hostel. A short taxi ride later, Claus was jumping on his bed.

Captain Hostel is located on a building from the 1920's, at walking distance from The Bund and Nanjing street. The room we got was luxurious and imo could compete with any 3-star hotel in Europe. We got a good view of some old buildings and The Bund.

As of Oct 2009, we paid around 300 RMB for a double room for 1 night.

Unique Quality: - Breakfast was included in the price (you could choose from the 3 daily options) and if you don't like any of them, they have more options for you to choose from (for a fee).
- Free wifi.
- Walking distance from the main sights.
- Bike renting services.
- Captain Bar!

Shanghai's Best Kept Secret hotel

This is one of the more wonderful hostels we ever stayed in. In fact, we can say that this is a hotel already. This art deco building constructed in the 1920's is majorly renovated. The room we stayed in is really huge with ensuite bathroom complete with fresh towels, hand towels, face towels, shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shower caps, comb, and soaps. We were 3 in the room and we have 3 individual soft beds, night lights, a television and small sitting area. We truly recommend this for just less than $ 60 US dollar a night (online rate) triple sharing since you can see the magnificent Bund from your window.

Unique Quality: Fantastic! A mere 1-2 minute walk and you are on the Bund, 10 minutes leisure walk to Nanjing Road (shopping), and you can walk anywhere even at night.

There's also a bar at the top floor where you can dine and drink, and this roofdeck area overlooks the whole of Bund. What more could you ask?

If you are a backpacker, this is also a great place for just $ 10 US dollar a night on a big, comfortable bunk with its own night light, own locker.

Great hostel one block from the Bund

I stayed at the Captain Hostel on Fuzhou Rd. for two nights and loved it. The sailor bunks are 60 RMB ($7.50) per night and there are 8 beds to a room. The beds go well with the sailor theme and make the stay a little more interesting. There is an individual locker for each bed and new clean sheats are put on every morning. The showers were not the greatest in terms of lighting and looks but there always seemed to be someone cleaning, so I imagine they are not that bad. I would still recommend wearing flipflops to the showers but the water is warm and has good water pressure, so that is a definite plus. There is a nice lobby area, a bar on the top floor and computers with internet (I forget how much it cost, but it was not too bad). Most of the people at the front desk speak English as well.

They also have special class and first class cabins, however I am not sure what the price is of these.

I did not take advantage of it, but the Captain Hostel also has a boat, that looks like a lot of fun, that goes along the Huangpu River.

The location is great, only a block away from the Bund and a nice walk to the Yuyuan Gardens and Nanjing Donglu among many other places.

Unique Quality: inexpensive, clean, great location

Cheap stay next to the Bund

Captain YH on Fuzhou Lu No. 37 which is right at the Bund situated in a colonial building. www.captainhostel.com.cn, phone (21)-63219331. You can see the Pearl Tower from the window! In 2003 they charged 55 kuai for dormitory, around New Year 04/05 they asked for 60. In August 2006 they went up to 70 Yuan!
Showers and toilets are in western style, a washing machine is waiting for you.

Affordable & Convenient

The Captain Hostel was a pleasant surprise. Being a Hostel, I was expecting little, but the twin room we had was a good size and had a nice new, clean bathroom. We had a TV, although no English channels :o) The Hostel itself has some good facilities too. We didn't use the bar, but the internet was useful, although expensive and slow.

The best things was the location. Just over the road from the Bund and close to everything.

A Room With A View

Captain Hostel is in essence a clean, simple hotel where you can get a single room or a dorm for a very reasonable price, and often a room with a fantastic view.

There is also a roof bar and outdoor terrace, with fantastic views towards the Pearl Tower and the river, as well as internet access in the reception area.

The staff are very helpful and polite, and you are made to feel welcome.

Unique Quality: The best part is the naval - themed rooms with anchors and ships all over the show.
The hotel is in a prime location right near the Bund, and easy to get back to after a night on the lash!!

The best Shanghai Hostel

Captain Hostel is located in a bright and beautiful building. It's newly renovated and is probably the nicest hostels I've ever stayed at; it's better than most budget hotels! It's conveniently located and has a nice pub upstairs with a big-screen TV for watching football.

Unique Quality: It has washing machines in the bathroom for laundry, and get this - it's FREE!!! Just buy your own soap...
