November weather conditions in Shanghai

by aukahkay

I will be in Shanghai and Hangzhou from 18 - 23 November 2006. May I know what kind of temperatures and weather to expect at this time of the year? Do I need a winter overcoat?

Looking at the way that temperatures are now, I'd guess around 10 degrees Celsius. Yes, you'll need a winter overcoat unless you're really foolhardy. If you don't have one, buy them here, not Singapore!

Travel Tips for Shanghai

New shopping malls

by Amareyui

Another interesting aspect of today's Shanghai is the many new shopping malls constructed over the past few years. Most of these new buildings have great looking exterior. Curiously enough, some are home to low priced computer's hardware and software. This is a clear sign that while construction of new buildings seem to never cease in Shanghai, the demand for such infrastructures cannot keep up. Thus, these expensive shells are only a better shelter for the locals to house low priced businesses, or window shopping in front of shops they will not think of entering.

Maglev Train to Shanghai

by tyusen

Maglev train is also called "linear motor car". This train run by magnetism without wheels. Shanghai is the only place which we can take such trains in the world, so I tried to take it when I visited there. Can you believe it runs over 430km/h? We could get to LongYang Road station in Shanghai city from Shanghai Int'l airport within 8 minutes. If you take a normal train, it will take over 20 minutes. It was really very exciting experience for me. When I took it in 2004, one way fare was 75 RMB but I'm not sure if the fare is still same.

Jinmao Tower

by traveloturc

This tower is the tallest building on China's mainland (421m). Its design combines traditional Chinese and gothic architecture. If you are not afraid of heights, going to the top of the Jinmao Tower is an interesting experience. Viewing from the dizzying heights of the 88th floor in the evening, you will have an illusion that Shanghai is a glittering light ball. On the 87th floor, a bar, the Cloud Nine, gives you the feeling of being in the clouds – sometimes there is no view at all because you're surrounded by them.
The luxurious Grand Hyatt hotel, with 555 rooms, occupies the Jinmao Tower's 53rd to 87th floors. Offices on the lower 52 floors have a capacity for about 10,000 people.
Besides the Grand Hyatt and offices, luxury-brand shops, restaurants and relaxing coffee houses occupy the Jinmao Tower. This superb building represents the new Shanghai: young, vibrant, and inspirational.

Dulun Cultural Walk

by goglobe

In the days gone by, there were several foreign concessions in PuXi district. One of these was the Japan Concession, easily recognisable by the lowly buildings in the district. But here one could trace LuXun's literary history as well as the crescent block of old houses and temples.

For me as a Euriopean person this building and ad look really interesting together: English and Brazilian and Chinese footballers promote Pepsi, an American product ,on a building decorated with Chinese lampions in Shanghai, on Nanjing Road. I took this picture and similar others because I felt that this Eastern-Western mixture is what characterises Shanghai most.
