clothing bargains
by tkdsimes
Hi.
I will be spending an afternoon and a night in the French Concession in May.
Last year while in Guangzhou I was able to purchase a designer label leather jacket very cheaply in a kind of upstairs backroom "shop" where I was directed by a scout on one of the main shopping streets. This was presumably fake, but of good quality. Unfortunately, it was stolen from my suitcase while in Latin America last week.
Is there anywhere in Shanghai, not more than 10 minutes by taxi from the French Concession, where I could buy a replacement? Doesn't have to be a designer label, I'd just like to get a new smart leather jacket at a very cheap price.
Another question. Where should I go to stock up on green tea to take home?
Thanks,
tkdsimes

You can look in the Xiang Yang market. It is the place to go for knock-offs. It is just a short trip on the subway. See my Shanghai page for information on where it is, how to get there.

Xiangyang Lu market already closed down more than a year ago, but some of the vendors are still "walking the streets" in that area.
Try Qipu Lu.
For green tea, try TenFu tea shop; or there's a bigger tea market at Tianshan Lu but quite far from this area around 30-40 RMB taxi ride.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Yes, the old xiang yang market at Xiang Yang road has been closed for quite a while. The "New Xiang Yang Market" is in the subway station under the Science and Technology building. It is about the same size as the old one, the only difference is it has air conditioning now and you don't have to stand in the rain. I was there in February and got a real nice leather fold-over suite case.
If you doubt it is the Xiang Yang Market, look at the brass plaque at the end of the stores. It says Xiang Yang Market.
See my Shanghai page for information about how to easily get there by subway.
Travel Tips for Shanghai
Shanghai Bund at Night
by yipsufen
It's best to view Shanghai Bund during night time, where streets are abuzzed with activities & buildings decorated with flash lights. The night scene at Shanghai Bund is a must-see for all tourists to Shanghai. The view is so spectacular & you will be mesmerised by Shanghai's beauty & sophistication.
Mega Shopping Malls!!
by cheezecake_deli about Xujiahui
Most tourists don't get to Xujiahui, a prime residential and shopping district in Puxi just southwest of the city centre, unless they are staying at one of the mid-range hotels here. Five roads meet at the busy junction above Xujiahui metro station, at which five large shopping malls are found: Grand Gateway, Pacific, Number 6, Oriental and Meiluocheng. Xujiahui metro station itself has an underground mall with countless small shops. Unlike Nanjing and Huaihai roads, the shops here generally sell things that ordinary Shanghai residents want to buy! Everyday things. Prices are more reasonable compared to Huaihai or Nanjing roads.

Shanghai Municipal History Museum
by aramat
The excellent exhibition in the basement of the Oriental Pearl Tower tells the story of Shanghai, with lifesize replicas of buildings, street scenes and wax figures. I think it's worth to pay for the autoguide, but there is quite a lot of written information available as well (in Chinese and English). I only planned to stay for about an hour, but it took me more than three hours to see everything, and I would have stayed longer happily, if I had more time to see the city.
Shanghai - Juxtaposition of New and Old
by chatterley
"First Impression of Shanghai"
It was an interesting experience, visiting Shanghai. This city is one of the most affluent, fastest-growing and modern cities in China, with new skyscrapers being built every other day; but it also retains some of its old world charm, just like what the author Zhang Ai Ling had described in her books.
The juxtaposition of the new and the old do not clash, it simply adds to the magical charm of Shanghai...
