What are the best vegetarian options in Shanghai...or your favorite restaurants with veggie options. Thanks and have a great day.

If you are a strict vegetarian, you should be cautious of the "vegetarian options" in common restaurants. They may use meat sauces, small bits of chopped meat or fish sauces. Even tofu is sometimes cooked with meat sauce or small bits of pork. You can sometimes get the cook to avoid all meat if you ask for "su de" when you order a vegetable dish. A strict vegetarian in China will usually eat at home or the home of friends who understand his restriction. Even Chinese friends who are not vegetarian will not always understand the strict no meat products idea.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Socialist art

by solopes

Ideologies and cultural movements come and go along the history, but their influence in art does remain as a testimony of the gone days and ideas.

China is a curious example of that. The strength (and violence) of the revolutionary times led to artistic creations, with nothing in common with traditional Chinese art.

Instead of sensibility and fine details, we see powerful gathering of determined people, the collective movement always imposing itself to the individual roles and expressions.

In the Bund, a socialist composition, backed by Russian architecture, is a fine example.

bus/metro/FEET or...

by allure

bus/metro/FEET or yellow/blue/white texi(taxi companies differ from each other by colors, the 3 colors are those 'big' companies with good service). Actually u can get everything by bus+feet. Besides, Shanghai people are VERY friendly & will guide u. Get a map on hand & that's all.
People Square: Metro Line 1 or 2; Chenghuang Temple: walk from People Square/Bund(15mins); Bund: walk from People Square (20mins); East Pearl Tower: take any bus to Pudong at People Square for 2 stops & walk. TIPS: at Shanghai 80,000-People-Stadium, there 8 sightseeing bus lines - easy & comfortable.

Yuyuan garden - Not to be missed

by 2rs

This 500 year old Ming garden is one of the few old tourist sites in Shanghai and is not to be missed. It's a beatifull garden with old buldings, caves, ponds, trees and stones. The terrain and the artificial hills has been built with special stones from a lake in the Zhejiang Province and if you look at them with a little imagination you can see all kinds of shapes of humans and animals.

Ceramics

by solopes

Being one of the two top sections of City's Museum, for us, coming from Xi'an, it didn't add much.

But for a first approach to China, its wide collection, covering a large frame of time from the stone age, is very interesting, and easy to see, in a very well organized space.

Shanghai, China August 2007

"Surprise"

Shanghai is one of the most beutiful cities I have seen. The old buildings, the new buildings, the glass skyskrapers and the european style buildings all along the river. What a surprise was that for me, I had a complete different picture in my mind.
