Shopping in Shanghai
by Pinaks
Hi,
Need some advice on shopping in Shanghai. I understand Nanjiang Lu is good for shopping & please advice if there is any other area worth looking at.Will be staying in Puding area & mainly looking for garments & chinese antiques.
Moreover, I need to buy a car cd player & can I get something real cheap?
Amongst big chains, which are the ones worth visiting (I know about Carrefour)?
Any unput would help.
Thanks a lot in advance.
cheers

For garments :
XuJiaHui, is a good choice and things are not so expensive. Just take metro line 1 , get off at Xujiahui station .
And NanJing road . of course. But Nanjing road is divided into 2 parts. NanJing road E. and W. I like west part. You can find a wide variety of world-famous brands there and meanwhile .compare to east , not so many people.
Another one is Huaihai Road , it is Shanghai's most fashionable road, with shopping malls standing along it. You can take Metro Line No.1 and get off at Huangpi Road S. or Shaanxi Road S. to reach this road.
im not sure about the car cd player. I think you can try best buy in XuJiaHui .
Chinese antiques - Yuyuan garden and Dongtai road as Vivian recommend.
have a nice trip la :)

Nanjing East and Nanjing West road is the best and most crowded place to shop (both have large department stores and small boutiques). If you are from US, I suggest to buy your electronics there - prices are lower and there is no risk of no-return policy if something goes wrong.
And another advice - stay away from Chinese young women pretending to be English students trying to learn English, invite tourists (mainly single male) for a talk to local coffee shops of their choice, where the naive tourists are charged exorbitant prices for their food and drinks (food and drinks are ordered by those ladies behind the backs of unsuspected tourists). If the customer refuses to pay, he is threatened and forced to use his credit card to pay. With limited Chinese language ability the foreign customer has little chance to refuse, specially when he is alone.
Here is an address of one of such places, where I was “robbed” of 3395 RMB for 4 cups of tea and other drinks ordered by those unscrupulous “students”:
Sundy Coffee, No. 558 7th Floor, East Nanjing Road, Shanghai (above one of the department stores).
Enjoy Nanjing Road -

Travel Tips for Shanghai
That's a lot of goldfish!
by meteorologist1
Yuyuan Garden was very beautiful with the ponds, bridges, trees, and houses. The ponds were filled with extremely large goldfish. There were several children feeding the fish, and those fish all swam to the surface and were fighting with each other for food. The sight was amazing (see picture). The goldfish were so big and fat.
Huangpu River night Cruise
by hand4love about Huangpu River night Cruise
it takes about 1 hour for the night Cruise in Huangpu River in Shanghai with the greatest view of Bund at night , one of the most attractive places in Shanghai. you may have chance to have Buffet or shows on board, but it depends on the cruise you choose. Casual
A Shanghai institution
by cheezecake_deli about Mei Long Zhen
Established in the 1930s, Meilongzhen is a Shanghai institution, having been visited by countless foreign dignitaries, as is evident from the photos on the walls. It serves Shanghainese and Sichuanese cuisine. Food quality is okay and service so-so. The Shanghainese dishes are fine, but I've had better elsewhere.
Nice worth seeing !!!

This temple complex is intresting and worth the bit out of the way location, but remeber the transportation is soooo cheap that it won't hurt you in the pocket to come here.......several large pavillons cover this temple area with the Jade Buddha statue at it's center piece, one must buy a seperate entrance and no photos are allowed inside the area of the jade buddha. Leave about 1 hour to see the entire complex......well worth it !!!!!
Shanghai

Shanghai provides some stark contrasts between the old and the new. Part of the old town is being preserved for tourists. Unfortunately (for history), much of the surrounding areas have been torn down and will soon have high rises and shopping centers.
