Shanghai weather in August

by jamw198

What's the weather like during Aug?? Is it still hot? When's the best time to visit? I prefer to travel when it's not too hot nor cold. Temperature below 20 degree celsius would be ideal. Thanks!!

Re: Shanghai weather in August

by honestjohn

August is hotest period, from mid of October, temperature could be below 20C.

Re: Shanghai weather in August

I think I would recommend travelling in April, or after the 1st week of October.
Look on http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/ZSSS/1972/8/10/PlannerHistory.html?dayend=24&monthend=8&yearend=1972&req_city=Hongqiao&req_state=SH&req_statename=Shanghai for historical weather data for Shanghai in August.

It was around 30C when I was there last month in May.

End of October till mid of November will be better, much rain expected in April.

Re: Shanghai weather in August

by Lance_in_shanghai

July and August are the hottest months as it is in most of northern hemisphere. Shanghai is ALWAYS humid. I prefer November or December. Last November most days were near 20 degrees, December near 15. Nights do not cool off much. You should plan on rain any week of the year. Umbrellas are universally preferred over rain clothes as you will sweat like a mule under a raincoat not matter the temperature.

Thanks for all the advice!! I've decided to go in this Oct. So now I need info about:
- mid-range accommodations but must have good location
- must see places in Shanghai & also nearby

Should I join a tour or just take a taxi for all the attractions??

Re: Shanghai weather in August

by ellyse

What's your price range for "mid-range"?
Also, what are your sightseeing interests and preferences?
No need for a tour nor taxi all the way.

Re: Shanghai weather in August

by jamw198

Hopefully the rates can be below 100 RMB per room. So.....any recommendations?

Re: Shanghai weather in August

by ellyse

I'm sorry to say that your price range isn't "mid-range" in Shanghai.
And unfortunately for a private room in downtown I think that's way too cheap. If that's your budget then you should be trying for dorm beds instead.

Re: Shanghai weather in August

by jamw198

Alright....so how much would a room costs then. I just want to plan my budget. Other places (Xitang, Wuzhen, Hangzhou, Suzhou) should be cheaper, right?

Re: Shanghai weather in August

by ellyse

Private rooms for 100 RMB (less on weekdays) are achievable for Xitang and Tongli.
Private rooms in Hangzhou and Suzhou would be about 160-180 RMB; for Shanghai 200 RMB or more.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Man and child

by herzog63

I don't know why but I noticed that alot of the babies were being cared for by the fathers in Shanghai. When I did my wandering through the residential areas. Maybe the moms were working? Maybe the Moms needed a break? I don't know...just something that I noticed. I spend alot of time with my son and I also did the same when he was a baby....I guess we are all the same all over!?!

Nightlife street

by ahoerner about Maoming lu

This street is supposed to be famous in Shanghai for its crowded bars and nightclubs, but as we went there there was absolutely no signal of nothing going on...

Remarks: the streets around were on renovation. Maybe that is the reason for so few people out there...

A definite MUST DO in Shanghai

by lindyz about Cloud 9 Skylounge

When you travel you really have to take hold of all unique opportunities that come your way. Whilst in Shanghai, we had the opportunity to have a drink in the highest bar in the world - HELL YEH!!! OF COURSE WE ARE GOING TO DO THAT - STUFF THE COST - JUST DO IT!!!

The Cloud 9 Skylounge is situated in the Jin Mao Building in Pudong, right next to the new Shanghai World Financial Centre. The easiest way to get there is to take the Subway Line 2 and get off at the first stop past Nanjing Road East, I cant remember the name of the stop, but it was only 3rmb to get there from Nanjing Road East Station. Now, that is about as much as anyone told me about getting to the Cloud 9 Skylounge, BUT ... let me tell you that it is not as simple as that. Arent you lucky you have me here to tell you EXACTLY how to get there!!!

We didnt even make a reservation and as we entered the bar I had a sinking feeling that they were going to tell us they had no free tables, but they did! To get to the Jin Mao Building is pretty easy, although its a fair walk from the subway station. We entered the building, looking for signs to the Cloud 9 Skylounge, but found none anywhere. We asked several people, who kept pointing us in the wrong direction. We were going up and down lifts and elevators and getting nowhere. So, we asked what looked like a westerner tourist and he pointed us to the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

OK .... so now here are your directions. Find the elevator to the Grand Hyatt Hotel and take it to the 54th floor. You then have to change lifts and take another elevator to the 85th floor. You then have to YET AGAIN change lifts and take your final elevator to the 87th floor!!! Now, by this time you are very confused and very thirsty so in need of liquid respite! But ... hold onto your wallets, cos drinks up here dont come cheaply!!!

Tracy and I both had 2 drinks and we shared a rather modest cheese platter (thats basically about all we could afford!) and the bill was indeed the dearest food/drink bill on our whole China trip! I had 2 Cosmopolitan Cocktails at 90rmb each and Tracy had 2 Chardonays at 85rmb each and the cheese platter cost 110rmb - total bill of 529rmb!!! Half of that equals $46AUD each - WOW what a price to pay just to say you have been to the highest bar in the world! There is also a 15% surcharge (I call it a tip!) on top of your bill,l but all in all, I would say it was worth it. When we first got there, there was only very light cloud coverage and we had good views of the Pearl Tower, but about half an hour later, the dreaded cloud rolled in again, and we could see absolutely nothing!

BUT WE DID IT!!! WE HAD A DRINK IN THE HIGHEST BAR IN THE WORLD!!!

Historic site - Chinese Communist Party

by meteorologist1

Adjacent to Xin Tian Di is the historic site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China, held back in July 1921, which marked the birth of the party. You will see a beautiful two-story Shikumen building here. You can also visit the inside of the building.

Shanghai! Its a lively city

by imstress

"Shanghai! Its a lively city"

When you think of Shanghai, what would be the first thing that come to mind?

The Bund is by far the most famous attraction in Shanghai.

The landmark in the city is the rocket look alike Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Pudong Special.

The best way to check out both banks of the Huangpu River and their sights is to take the splendid Huangpu River Tour .

Nanjing Lu is the busiest shopping street in Shanghai.

The famous Peace Hotel and People's Square (Renmin Guang Chang) are the famous historical landmarks found in Shanghai.

Yu Yuan and Cheng Huang Miao are also not to be missed.

"Cheng Huang Miao, Yu Yuan"

The temple, or Cheng Huang Miao, is only a short distance from Yu Yuan. It is a touristy but impressive warren of lanes and stalls. Once every city and large town possessed a temple to the town gods, but few have survived.

"Great shopping at Nanjing Road"

If you dont like fake goods and dont like to bargain then Nanjing Road is the best place to go for shopping.

I has department stores, specialty shops, exotic restaurants, theaters and cinemas lining up the street.

The 5-km-long Nanjing Road is the most sophisticated shopping and tourist complex in Shanghai.
