Asia Itinerary for Shanghai

by GoodDaySunshine

I'm planning a trip to visit a friend in Shanghai for 15 days and trying to decide on a couple of side trips that won't break the bank. What are top recommendations for a traveller like me - 25, female, loves beaches, art and culture...Thanks!

If you insists on staying in China, and you still wanna go to the beach, maybe Hainan Island would be something for you. It is also known as "the Chinese Hawaii". If you book well in advance, airfares a reasonable.
Hangzhou is nearby, and is worth a visit, you can do it as a day trip, or stay for a night or two.

A trip to Suzhou would be nice.
It´s really an interesting and historic town and only 45 minutes away by train from Shanghai.

And if you have 15 days then you might even consider jumping the train to Beijing and stay there for a couple of days, as there are some really big sights there.

You can take Suzhou, Hangzhou into your consideration. The two cities are close to Shanghai, easy to do side trip and worthy of visiting. Fast train between the places is available, apprx 30min. The price is also sensible. They are watertown style cities, totally different from shanghai(more modern). The feeling there is nice and relaxing...

Hi Dana, Shanghai is a very modern city which you will fall in love with! 15 days is not enough to enjoy all the sights, bars, clubs and restaurants! Blow your budget and go to Beijing, which has some great history and you would never regret this!! Or you would enjoy Suzhou, which is easy by train and there are many young people of your age. The West lake is also a great visit and easy by train, with which you would have a great time! Or catch the bus ( 3-4 hours) and go to Anji, a very special town which we would love to go back on our next visit to Chana!!!! What ever you do, have a great time!!

Hi Dana. I am planning a trip also and like you, will also be meeting a friend in Shanghai. I will be doing a side trip to Suzhou from there and maybe also to Tongli, another historic water town and according to some, less touristy.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Wander the small back streets of Shanghai!

by herzog63

As you wander through these small streets and alleys you can listen to people just going about their daily routine. Women talking... Men on their way to work... Laundry hanging everywhere!! It's great!! These kinds of areas are my favorite parts of any city!! I came across several very nice people that would stop to pose for a photo and give a greeting. Sadly I couldn't speak much Chinese and they couldn't speak English so we only exchanged smiles!

By Bus...

by Tal_A

By Bus ---------------------------------------------
Getting to and from Shanghai by bus is usually less convenient than traveling by train. A deluxe coach bus (58 Laochongqing Nan Lu, tel. 021/6358-8089) runs between Shanghai and Nanjing (3 1/2 hours). Regular buses, most of which lack comfort, run from the long-distance bus station (Qiujiang Lu west of Henan Bei Lu). These are acceptable for shorter distances such as to Hangzhou and Suzhou. The ticket office for Suzhou tickets is at the eastern end of People's Square. Check out train tickets before taking the bus.

Cheap Finds at Qipulo Night Market

by purplefeet

Though hard to reach from the nearest stn which is Baoshan subway station because it involves walking several streets and even crossing an elevated pedestrian walkway/bridge, the finds at this Night Market is worth it all. Winter clothes such as sweaters, knits, coats and jackets can be had for RMB30-60. Boots and flats are sold for RMB25-40. My friend bought a sneakers for only RMB25 a pair. This is literally a street market as all the merchandise either hung on movable racks or on the street. I bought scarves for RMB10 each. There is also a All-10 store wherein all products are priced RMB10. I also bought a set of embelished hand mirror and comb and hair ponytail for my nieces.

Shanghai Grand Theatre

by cheezecake_deli

This is a picture of the Shanghai Grand Theatre taken from People's Square. Like many buildings in Shanghai, it is ultra modern (or is it post modern?) - all gleaming glass and steel. There are regular performances from local and visiting companies.
