I am In a Dilemma

by faridah

I need opinions..!!! I have signed up for a trip to Beijing/Inner Mongolia/Shanghai 2 months back. I will be going with my husband and 2 kids aged 8 and 11.
The thing is I keep reading of the deadly EV71 virus that are going around in China and I am so worried now. I have already paid a deposit of $2000 to the tour agency abd have to pay the rest in 10 days time. Do you think I should continue with the trip or should I cancel?

I will only be in Beijing for 1 day, then off to Inner Mongolia for 4 days then 2 nights in Shanghai. What's the situation in China now? I will be calling the travel agency later to see what my options are...

In my humble opinion, I would continue with the trip. These cases are a very small percentage of the local population. Their exposure is more intimate, more prolonged and usually involves much lower sanitation standards than what a tourist will ever experience.

China is a large country and the virus only found in some place and it's far away from Beijing, Shanghai. Don't worry, the government has take control of it. I live in Beijing and never worrying the virus can impact our everyday life.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies.. It is scary the way the newspaper and the internet puts it. What worries me is that it affects the kids and have killed many, as a mother I tend to be on the paranoid side.. : )

From the news reports it sounds like the cases are mainly in Fuyang, Anhui province. Nowhere near where you're going, so I don't see any undue cause for worry.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Shanghai Taxis

by mike53

Many taxis are reluctant to travel over the river to the Pudong side of the city and i have on three occasions now been asked to get out of the taxi becuase they refuse to go,it is worse when it raining becuase they always have many customers travelling short distance and at 10rmb min fare they can earn more money in short trips than the 25 rmb or so that it costs to go to pudong area.If this happens to you the best thing to do(unless you want to argue in Chinese) is find one of the many city center hotels and get your taxi there, they will not refuse to go to Pudong when they pick up at hotels.

The Richness of Hangzhou Cuisine.

by Shanghai_fabulous about Perfect House Restaurant (Wan Jia Deng Huo)

It's one of the best Hangzhou Style restaurants, now has 4 chain-stores in Shanghai, each in average can accommodate thousands of customers at one time. Sometimes you have to push through the crowd to be led to you dinning table. After seated, ordering is going to make you headache again because there're too many dishes to choose from. You can order dishes listed in the menu or just go to the exhibit room yourself and choose from the samples there, it's much easier and fun! Just ask a waitress to assist you if you don't have many ideas of what to order. Grilled ling fillet, sesame on both sides of fillet.

Deep fried corn cake.

Lamb on a stick.

All kinds of seafood.

Yu Garden

by simcard

My feeling about this garden is you can always get surprise while u are there. When you step into the entrance, you would think "oh, it isn't big - so so". But as you walk further, you can always find more and more to explore. It is really amazing!
