Nostalgia 2 - old concert hall
by goglobe
Amidst construction site next to the flyovers and the People's Square, and just further to the old Grand Theatre in Nostalgia 1 above is a re-sited old Shanghai Theatre, the entire building just successfully lifted off its base and repositioned to a new orienation, the proud project just completed early 2003. With the ultra modern design of the new Opera House just 1km away, this old buiding will be an invaluable piece of nostalgic landmark in modern Shanghai. This old performing arts venue is finely preserved with refurbished fine intereiors too, with improvements to the auditorium.
What an respectable policy for the city to preserve its past culture when modernity floods in so quickly
The Craziest Party in Shanghai
by mortin21 about Zapatos
Describing itself as the craziest party in Shanghai may be a bit boastful of this Mexican/Spanish bar, but good times are still to be had by all. They freely invite people to jump up and dance on the bar while tequila is continuously flowing. Margaritas are key here as it is the theme, and tacos and burritos can even be found earlier in the evening. This is a good nightspot but can get a bit crowded so avoid if that's not your thing.
My best meal in Shanghai thus far....
by MaosRedArmy about Le Garcon Chinois
Le Garcon Chinois was not very easy to find, but it was definitely worth the hunt. The resaurant is located in a quaint, old French house and is like going into somone's home.
While classified as a Spanish restaurant, the menu had a mix of items, hence my classification as eccletic/international. The menu is very diverse, and we liked all that we ordered.
This is a hidden gem that is perfect for a romantic night in the old French concession area of Shanaghai. After dinner, you can easily walk to a number of bars and clubs, or jump in a taxi and head home. The Tapas Sampler was great.
Tuna Tartare was good.
The Seafood Paella was good.
The Baked Sea Bass was great.
Wine list - very resonable and good.
JinMao Building
by kphstar
Having the title of the tallest building in Shanghai and top 5 in the world, this is not a place for those who have issues with vertigo. Because on the 88th floor of the JinMao building, you have the best and most spectcular view of shanghai (tha's if it's a clear day). The observation desk allows you see a complete 360 degree view of the city.
However, for the 50RMB that is charged to take the bullet elevator toward the gateways of heaven, it's not really money well spend. Save that money and do the next better thing. Go through the Grand Hyatt (which shares the building) and find their signature bar "Cloud 9". It's located one flool below the Observation deck and is said to be the best place to have a drink. I can only image what it is like because they have a no children policy. Not even an infant accompanied by 4 grown adults can enter those sacred grounds.
Shanghai in Three Days
by Solupine
I am currently living in Beijing and decided to go to Shanghai last minute (that day) with my friend. We managed to fit a lot into three days: Nanjing Donglu, French Concession, Ocean Aquarium, Boat Tour . . .
