Travel Tips for Shanghai
Walk along the Bund
by aukjejetty
The Bund is the classic image of Shanghai and the city's main attraction. Sweeping along the western side of the Huangpu river, the majestic buildings date back to Shanghai's important historical days. Many banks and financial companies built impressive offices here in the early 20th century when Shanghai was the financial capital of Asia.
The city side of The Bund is packed with classic architecture. Buildings to look out for include, the old Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, the Customs House and its landmark clock, the Bank of China and the Peace Hotel.
Shanghai Tang Meets Shanghai
by nomadig about Shanghai Tang
Shanghai Tang, David Tang's East meets West fusion fashion concept store has landed Shanghai for a couple of years ago. There are several locations around the city, we visited the small boutique in Xintiandi.
The clothes and accessories combine Asian aesthetics with Western design and quality. Currently, these garments have also some curiosity value, as they aren't found that easily from Europe or America.
The small shop contains a small selection of clothes and a good variety of scarfs. Pop over while you are going to eat in the Xintiandi restaurants, but remember to save some money for the restaurant bill.
Sitting on top of the world.
by MaosRedArmy about Cloud 9 Sky Lounge
It's called Cloud 9 for a very good reason - you are sitting in a lounge on the 87th floor (the top floor) of Jin Mao Tower - the 2nd tallest building in the world - overlloking all of ShangHai. The view on a clear night is mesmerizing. This is definitely not a hidden gem and it's always full of tourists since the Hyatt occupies the top 50 or so floors.
But, after switching elevators 3 times (including a walk through the highest hotel lobby in the world) you get to the top floor and enter Cloud 9. The place is very dark, everything inside is black and the focal point of this place is the view. The music - usally house or acid jazz - adds to the ambience.
However, they do pour a nice martini - a healthy Stoli Martini runs about 50RMB (US$6.00), which is not as steep as I would have thought for a place with such a view.
If you've never been to Shanghai, I highly recommend it, and every time I return I always enjoy going up there to have a drink or 2 to get the feeling of sitting on top of the world.
If you are looking for a cheap place to drink, this is not for you. The last time I was there, there was a 90RMB ($11) drink minimum for each person that entered. Good Stoli Martinis and Cosmopolitans. Not the best drinks in the world, but not bad, either.
Bund Memorial
by cheezecake_deli
At the northern end of the Bund is the Bund Memorial, a granite structure dedicated to war dead, with calligraphy by Jiang Zemin. It's pretty ordinary in my jaded eyes, but there are a number of riverside cafes and restaurants here - pricey no doubt but a nice place to watch the world go by.
Shanghai - Busy City!!
by CeciliaL
"Lining Up?"
Since I just moved to Shanghai, I am thinking I should probably write a few things about this city.
It was quite an interesting experience to visit this temple - due to the fact that I mistakenly followed the rule of 'lining up". No one really seemed to care if you were in front of them, getting ready to pay for the ticket...
So finally I realized I needed to just force my way to pay for a ticket. Hahaha, and I finally got into the temple.
"Bargaining"
Was not very successful with my bargaining yet. But I am sure I will get better as I stay here longer.
There are many many small shops around Yu Garden that sell all kinds of things - tea, chopsticks....... Was trying to get a tea set, but ended up buying tea.
