Tennis in Shanghai

by rangerted

I will be in Shanghai on business from 18th to 27th. Is there somewhere I can get good tennis match or clinic workout pretty easily? We work very late sometimes and may not be able to provide alot of notice. Staying at the San Want Hotel in the Xujiahui commercial centre. Can anyone help?

What time is "very late"? Gyms aren't typically open 24 hours anyway. :(

That's the problem. You know how the Chinese are. Work, work, work. Sometimes 18 hour days. Do you know any tennis players I can contact? Or clubs that would let me play for the time I'm there? Many thanks for response. Teddy

Nope, sorry. :( The only place that I can think of at the moment for a tennis court is on Fuxing Zhonglu, between Fenyang Lu and Baoqing Lu. Nearest metro stop is Changshu Lu (lines 1 & 7). Sorry I can't really be of help. Good luck!

Thank you so much Lucy for your reply. I will call them and see if they have anyone who can play with me. By the way, the San Want Hotel is very nice and the people are wonderful. All the best, Teddy Hamilton

Travel Tips for Shanghai

It was very funny to see this...

by zizquark

It was very funny to see this kid walking with his parents with his pants opened up. I thought it was just something out of the ordinary till I met some people on my flight home who also saw kids with their trousers opened. It makes potty training easier. I guess it saves time when you gotta go.

Fabulous Caramel Bread Pudding!

by HooptheWorld about Starbucks Coffee

The 2 Starbucks I liked in Shanghai were : the one at the Ritz Carlton because the caramel bread pudding is always fresh and they warm it up, plus it is intimate and lots of interesting people...and a wonderful waterfall area to sit in. ; the second one is in the French Quarter, next to a small park where some older people gather and sometimes you may watch them do T'ai Chi, and , again, the bread pudding is there! (can't get it in the States)...and there are two levels, with the second one very comfortable and cozy. ..and some of the staff are very friendly and helpful...a sweet feeling place. The fabulous caramel bread/custard pudding, especially when it is warmed-up....I could live on it. . ...delicious, perfect consistency, healthy and filling for a good price. The coffee at the one in the French Quarter is stronger than most Starbucks , so the taste is much, much better.

Day trip to Zhouzhuang

by SLLiew

An hour away is the beautifully preserved water village with canals of "Old Suzhou".

There are many stone bridges made famous by paintings over the canals.

Also there is a large number of Ming and Qing Dynasty family mansions open to tours. Do take a guided tour or follow one of the many groups in the language of your choice. The guide will describe the different parts of a typical family mansion and give you a taste of what life of the wealthy upper middle class family is life in those days. After one mansion, the rest are more or less a repeat.

The pork and chicken for sale are hung everywhere. They look better than they taste.

A boat ride around the canal seems to be a must and a good respite from the crowded streets and bridges of tourists everywhere.

The entry price is hefty but worthwhile. Many touts after you if you come alone without a tour guide. Highly recommended at least once.
