Shanghai Tip
by lexnrena
Visiting Nanjing Dong Lu Shopping District. It is a walking street with many shops, restaurants, museums, and hotels. At night this street could pass for one in Hong Kong, with all the neon lights flashing.
At the Sincere Department store, next to the Hotel Sofitel, you'll find the sex museum. Yep, it turns out that the Chinese have been having sex for thousands of years - which would help explain the 1.2 billion people that live there. And, the government has now permitted a musuem acknowledging the ancient Chinese sex culture. Unfortunately for us, we waited until our last day in Shanghai to visit this museum and that was the day it was closed. To find it, go around the side of the Sincere building. You'll find a side entrance with an elevator that will take you to the sexth floor.
Another one of Lena's fondest memories of Shanghai was that one of her former students met us there and stayed with us for three days. We introduced her to a real hamburger (NOT McDonald's) at Malone's Bar and Grill. She absolutely loved it, especially the 'egg' that was on top of the beef patty. We explained that what she thought was egg was actually cheese.

M-Box
Absolutely tip-top place if you like local live music and the place is packed out most nights, so much so that it is wise to call for a reservayion if you fancy eating here. Has both Western and Asian food but the place has music written all over it and this is a happening place that is well worth a visit. The bands start off at 9pm every evening and instead of short sets, they play all the way through until 1am.

Casual international dining and great views
by cheezecake_deli about New Heights
New Heights is a good place to drop by for drinks and/or food if you need a break on your Bund visit. It has panoramic views of Pudong and the Huangpu river, and you can sit indoors or outside on the terrace in summer. The menu is international and extensive; food quality is generally good.
The Jazz Band at the Peace Hotel
by xiquinho
Enter the door of the Peace Hotel and you are whisked back to Shanghai in its pre-war golden age. Every night in the bar on the ground floor, the Jazz Band of now rather elderly musicians plays New Orleans-style jazz and dance music from the Big Band era.

Looking for an adequate guidebook? Get the "Lonely Planet: China". I had the edition from 2002. It was very reliable. I think there is also one guide for Shanghai from LP, but I did not have that one.
Shanghai is probably the most modern and western city in China (except maybe Hong Kong). You will not have problems finding anything you want (Accomodation / Food / Shopping). This city is the best advertising for China. Impressive skylines, lots of new constructions complete the picture.
