Hi Balram,
I can only highly recommend the Hotel we have recently stayed at in Shanghai, for location and value.
It was the Jin Jiang Metropole Hotel at 180 Jianxi Road, Shanghai Phone 86-21-63213130.
We had a Superior twin bed room for 7 nts and cost was only $72AUD per nite, booked on the internet through expedia.
As I said, the location was fantastic, only a few walking blocks to the Bund and to Nanjing Road Mall. The price was great, only $36 each a nite. The Hotel itself was adequate, only 3 star, but worth every cent we paid. Rooms were large, plumbing was slightly temperamental, but that is our only fault with this Hotel. You can see pics and more info on my Shanghai page.
Hope this helps - Cheers :)

Check out Captain Hostel. They have private rooms with en-suite bathroom and their price includes breakfast. I can't say if they offer airport pickup because we came to Shanghai by train, but the views of the Bund are really nice. We paid 360 RMB for a private room for 2 for one night.

Central View Suites is near the corner of Nanjing, and Shanxi road. You don't get a better location than this. The price is good and the rooms are also. Look at upgrading the room if you are using a lot of internet time. The cost of internet is about 100 RMB for the day. The price of the upgraded room is about the same, and you get free internet, a bigger room, and lounge priviliges.

I wouldn't recommend Captain's Hostel to anyone I consider a friend. To cut long stories short, I find them overpriced and with terrible service (racist).
The price difference between 3 and 5-star is huge. Be more specific about your price range.
No need for airport pick-up -- those provided by hotels are a rip-off. Arrange for your own, or take a taxi, or airport shuttles, etc.
Travel Tips for Shanghai
Around Yu Garden
by traveloturc
Don't miss the shops lining the streets selling handicrafts, teas, silk clothes, calligraphy, jade decorations and china. Picking up one or two pieces as gifts for family, relatives and friends is definitely a good idea – even if at inflated prices but you have always the chances of bargaining...half of the price is always a secure price setting strategy...
Nice deco...but food is mediocare for the price
by Stevo_Jess about M on the Bund
Went there twice. Once was a corporate function for the opening of our Shanghai Office . We reserved the entire restaurant and found the food to be really bad and blame it on our tight corporate budget.
On another visit, we ordered off the menu with some clients . Wine list was good but for the price we are paying, we expect much better food.
I could have eaten better food in my hotel restaurant. If you reserve early, you might get a nice view of the Huangpu Jiang (The river) and the view of Pudong side of Shanghai.
Waiter and Waitress were quite pleasant. Reservation needed at all time ! None
On the 88th floor at Jin Mao Tower
by maria_hz
The Jin Mao tower is still the tallest building in Shanghai -- but not for long, as a neighbouring building is slated to become even taller. However that may be, on the 88th floor of Jin Mao Tower you have a stunning view of Shanghai. 8 is a lucky number, so 88 is doubly lucky.
Also lucky is the Hyatt Hotel located on the floors 53 to 87 in the same building, and from the inside of Jin Mao Tower, you can look down inside the hotel.
Come early in the morning, around 12 (Chinese lunch time) to avoid the worst crowds.
Ming dynasty canals
by cheezecake_deli
The flat countryside around Shanghai contains numerous "water" villages. The most famous of these, Zhouzhuang, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a picturesque town of cobblestone streets, narrow canals and stone bridges. It can be also, however, a rather commercial venture - its streets lined with souvenir shops, and crowded with local and foreign tourists. Nonetheless, Zhouzhuang makes a pleasant day trip from Shanghai, with plenty of opportunities for strolling alongside its canals and studying Ming architecture. Highlights include several bridges from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as a number of exquisite Halls of Residence. A single ticket allows entry to all of these sights, which is most convenient. Souvenirs, such as silk items, are also generally cheaper here compared to Shanghai.
Questions and Answers
Q: Best way to go to Zhouzhuang from Shanghai "whats the BEST way totour Zhouzhuang from Shanghai? Bus tour or train nor Ferry?"
A: "I think you can go by bus. Tickets can be purchased from Shanghai Toursit Bus Center(STBC). There are 5 center in all, which are locaed in Shanghai Stadium, Shanghai..."
