What's your budget for accommodation?
Stay in the French Concession near Tongren Lu (Nanjing Xilu), Maoming Lu or Xujiahui; or near Nanjing Lu pedestrian street and People's Square.

We stayed at three hotels, two in the French Quarter...perfect location for walking around the French Qtr. (City Hotel and Jin Jiang) and also for walking down Shanxi Rd. to nanjing Rd....found-out we did not need a taxi!! The French Qtr. is far more relaxing than the hotels on Nanjing, or thereabouts, and is full of unique stores, a good bookstore (fab travel books, etc), the street scene is endlessly fascinating...and, though crowded, less intense than Nanjing Rd.

Some hotel recommendations would be Jiujiu Holiday Hotel, Hanting Hotel (Shaanxi Nanlu branch) and Education Hotel. All these are in the French Concession area within walking distance of nightlife and shopping.

The Pacific Grand (Tai Ping) is in a great location. It is near the corner of Nanjing and Shanxi road. This is also called Citic Square, because the CITIC travel agency is here. It is only 2 blocks from the Tongren road bars, Malones other expat bars, the subway, and only a feet hundred meters from the shopping malls. Food in the malls and at Bi Feng Tang is great. Also look at the City Hotel. If price is no object, The Portman is super.

Look at my Shanghai pae for more information about this hotel and other things to do in the Jing An district.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Chinese crafts, food and more

by bitbit about Shanghai Old Street

The whole area consists of departmental stores, small shops as well as street-size stalls. Most of the stores are housed in anciet chinese architectural designed buildings so you can shop and sightsee at the same time!

As usual, you can find a wide variety of silk items, clothings, home furnishings, jewellery, food products as well as chinese arts and crafts. There are also street performances such as chinese puppets, acrobatic performances and musicals.

The Yu Yuan Garden is also located in the vicinity and well worth a visit as it's really beautiful with very nice landscaping and traditional chinese architectures. I love chinese crafts such as paper cutting, copper wire designs (made into signs) and chinese seals carving. You can also get to see how the craft masters do the pieces with their nifty hands. The paper cuttings with extremely intricate designs are sold on their own or in frames. You can also customise the paper cuttings by adding names and/or greetings.

How about making a chinese seal with your name so that you can use it on your correspondence and personal effects?

Or buy some chinese tea - the variety is just amazing with different teas proclaiming different health benefits! There are also many chinese food products ranging from chinese biscuits, candies to herbs and preserved meats. I paid 120RMB for 2 medium size paper cuttings with frames. 70RMB for a copper-wire sign with both english and chinese names in a frame.

Don't miss these!

by ChiSawGang about Little doughmeat balls.

This place was around the corner from my hotel, mystery meat with shrimp wrapped in dough and cooked in oil so the bottoms get nice and crunchy, watch when you bite into these, you'll be making a trip back to the hotel to change your shirt, they should be called explosive meatshrimp balls, I found the best way is to use your chopsticks and poke a hole on both sides, then squeeze some of the juice out first.

The sitting Buddha at the Jade Buddha Temple

by Nemoa

You can find this Jade statue at the Jade Buddha Temple.

The Sitting Buddha is 190 centimeters high and encrusted with agates and emmeralds. It portrays Buddha at the moment of meditation.

The Buddha is displayed in a hall or room where you are not supposed to take pics but the wardens are not vey zealous and they get easily distracted so, you will normally get a chance to take your pick :-)

Sorry mine is not too good. I had to take it from far.

Shanghai, a luxury and dissipation city

by yangzhigong

"Shanghai, a luxury and dissipation city"

If you ask a non-Chinese people what is China, they always know about Beijing and Shanghai. Shanghai is the most morden city since early last century becouse it's unique location. Shanghai is the end of Yangzi River, also very close to Japan and Korea, so it's grow up to be an improtant port and economic center of China.
