Shanghai art deco and colonial architecture
by cheezecake_deli
The buildings along The Bund have witnessed and survived many events in Shanghai's often tumultous history. Most were grand headquarters of large multinational banks and corporations, and were designed in flamboyant Art Deco, neo-Grecian or Renaissance styles. When they fled in post-1949 Shanghai, some of the buildings were taken over by government bodies; others were left empty. Today, The Bund buildings revival is well underway. Some have been successfully converted to retail spaces; others have remained office spaces. The Peninsula Shanghai will be opening along The Bund.
There are only a number of spots for drinking/eating along The Bund. Try the Peace Hotel at the corner with Nanjing East Road. Other options are located in Bund 3 or Bund 18, where there are a number of upscale bars, cafes and restaurants, many with great views of The Bund, the Huangpu and Pudong.
