Holiday Inn Downtown

in the downtown area, near the subways. Holiday In is famous around the world and we chose this Hotel because it is located in the dowtown area and the price is less than staying in the Pudong District (more shopping money hehehe!) and still has comfortable ameinites since it is a 4 star hotel. Holiday Inn Downtown Shanghai is located close to many of the attractions that draw travelers from all over the world to this city like us. The hotel is situated one and a half miles from the Bund and equidistant to the Xiang Yang Market. The Shanghai railway station and access to the city’s subway system are both available within a brisk 5 minute walk from the facility. The Holiday Inn Downtown Shanghai is located roughly 11 miles daway from the Hongqiao International Airport where we landed from Beijing.

Unique Quality: aside from the superb international breakfast meals consisting of chinese and assorted international goodies, The rooms at the Holiday Inn Downtown Shanghai are provided with numerous amenities like Satellite television service and high-speed Internet connectivity are standard (be ready to pay though). There are also minibars and safes, telephones with voicemail and coffeemakers in every room. The hotel has a total of 510 rooms including 41 suites, all comfortably furnished, and includes 20 floors located in the Great Wall Wing and 14 floors in the Plaza Wing. The Holiday Inn Downtown Shanghai contains a gift shop onsite as well as a host of other services. There are multiple restaurants and A Cafe De Coral Restaurant just Outside (popular Hong Kong Restaurant, See my hong kong tips).

The Holiday Inn Downtown is very useful for the station, but its location just outside the 'happening' part of Shanghai means that it offers very good rates.

There are two separate wings (I stayed in the Plaza Wing) but I understand both are the same kind of quality.

The rooms are compact, shall we say, but comfortable, clean and fresh. As well as the minibar it also has a kettle and tea/coffee.
Bathroom was good too.

Note that Holiday Inns guarantee that their online rates will be the best available online.

Unique Quality: The little lobby coffee shop is a great place for pastries and coffee is you don't fancy the full breakfast!

Directions: On Heng Feng Lu, the main road that runs just south of the railways station. It is a two minute walk (even with heavy luggage) from the station door.

This is an older hotel near the railway station.
It was not very well located for tourist travellers, because heavy traffic were everywhere and it was chaotic hit-and-miss not to get smashed by trucks and cars right outside the hotel. Also plenty of salesmen (selling everything) nearby.

We found the hotel service to be average only.
Also english is spoken with very basic skill.
Soundproofing was not good either.

Unique Quality: The hotel is actually 2 different "wings" but you have to go outside to reach the other. Some restaurants are on the other building etc. There is some shuttle service for guests between the wings, though.

If you intend to do a little bit of train travelling this might be good or want to skip a taxi from airport, the local bus 5 takes you directly to the hotel.

Directions: Very close to the railway station, which is by the way always very crowded.

This is a very good hotel of international standards. It is a bit old but well renovated when needed in the rooms. It is a bit impersonal. Has satellite TV. Very good breakfast.

Unique Quality: Espresso bar on the ground floor.

This is my first time to travel outside the country and alone inside the hotel. And it's not too bad, I would say. This hotel provides basic ammenities from, Internet access to bathroom accessories (shampoo, soap, toothpaste bath robes and slippers) are inside. But check with the Front Desk if they charge for local and internet calls. Because the last time that we went there they charge for both. Phone calls are expensive with the phone booths. There are two Holiday Inn in Down Town Shanghai. Ask which one serves the breakfast.

Unique Quality:

Great View of the City. With Whirlpool, Gym, Sauna, Karaoke, In-house Foreign Exchange (FOREX).

Shanghai Railway Station and Underground Subway to reach your business and tourist destinations. Transportation could be arrange with the Hotel.
