Great Value
The Holiday Inn Vista is not exactly in the city center but everything is just a cab ride away and fare is quite reasonable. The hotel itself is quite nice, I think it's relatively new with the retro-modern design and they have complete facilities such as pool, jacuzzi, gym and restaurants. I booked thru the internet and got their weekend rate at 590rmb for double w/ buffet breakfast. It's good value and their buffet breakfast was excellent.
However, during winter I think most hotels only have the heat on, no airconditioning and it gets really stuffy, you have to open the windows to let the air circulate. So best to request a room located far from the main street because it's quite noisy w/ cars passing when the windows are open.

Hotel near Railway Stations
Are there any hotels near the Shanghai South Railway Station? We are only staying for one night coming from PVG and before going to Hangzhou. Are they near the station? Or are we better off staying near the Shanghai Railway Station (in the north)?

There is Holiday-Inn Shanghai-Downtown hotel which is just across the shanghai south railways station.There are amny Holiday-inns hotels but this hotel is justacross thestation.Sorry i don't know other hotels.
To go to Hangzhou, best is from shanghai south station.There are many trains..choose the one which is fastest.

The Shanghai South train station is spanking new and quite a beauty to look at, I'd definitely pick to take a train to Hangzhou from that one instead of the Shanghai main train station. The fastest trains to Hangzhou go from the Shanghai South train station anyway.
There're quite a number of hotels near the Shanghai South train station, what's your budget like and when would your date of stay be? How many of you are there?
BTW, there're also direct airport shuttles from Pudong airport to Hangzhou, if you don't need to come through Shanghai city proper. However, I guess you might not be in time to catch one if you're arriving late. What time would you be arriving at Pudong airport?

BTW, I believe the Holiday Inn Downtown is actually opposite Shanghai MAIN train station, not Shanghai South train station. And I don't think too highly of it anyway, it looks rather run-down.

Hello its you again :) I like getting your advice!!
We are arriving at 10 pm at Pudong. Want to take a taxi to somewhere near the Shanghai south station and from there take a morning train to HZ. Budget about US20 to US35 if possible for a double. I looked before but dont seemed to be much choices on the internet.
How long does it take from PVG to South train station? Roughly how much will be the cab fare? They are metered right?

well, i suggest u may stay at Jinjiang Inn – Shanghai Jinjiang Park Inn, located at No.227 Hongmei Road, Shanghai, just opposite to the fomer meilong rail station, and only 1 stop from shanghai south rail station by No.1 subway.
standard room is rmb199/usd 25.it will cost u about rmb150/usd19 from pudong airport.

Oops, I forgot to ask, when would you be staying? It's almost the October holiday week, so if you're coming at that time, prices would be higher.
