there are two options i would recommend:
1. Qi Pu Lu (Qi Pu road). It's not too far from people square. Just hop on a taxi and tell the driver to go Qi Pu Lu market -- "Qi(1 tone) Pu(3) Lu(4) Shi(4) Chang(3)". there are many buildings full of shopps in the area, each has several levels. you might need a whole day to finish them. pls note most of them close very early around 5 o'clock.
2. Tao Bao City. It's on West Nanjing road (Nanjing xi lu), close to the crossing of Cheng du road, right opposite of Dagama BBQ restaurant.
and always remember... bargin bargin bargin :)
enjoy your shopping...

hi, i know some sellers from Xiang Yang market now have moved to Century Plaza underground. it's in Pudong. you can take mrt line 2 and alight at Shanghai Sci-tech Museum. this new market is just out of the station. enjoy the xiangyang price under better condition, clean and with air-con!

btw, another good place you can visit is Jing An Xiao Ting, 68 Yu Yuan Rd. it's behind Jing An Temple and SOGO. many years back, when the prime flea market at Huating Rd was removed many sellers moved to Xiangyang market and many of the left moved to this Jing An Xiao Ting.

Hi. there is a market called QIPU market on the QIPU road. not far from the people's square.
while, I suggested you'd better go together with a local chinese guide. because the guide will know much more about the price than you. and he can help you talk the price with the vendor.
it will save lots of money and time.
Travel Tips for Shanghai
The booming ex-pats sheltering complex
by Amareyui
Many foreigners now reside in Shanghai to take advantage of the rapid economic development. Most live in apartment complex where security is tight and management is of high-standard.
These gardens, as they are called, seem to effectively isolate the residents from the locals who might be living just a block away in the same neighbourhood for decades.
New Z class trains between Shanghai and Beijing
by towkay
If you can afford a little luxury, and have 12 hours to spare the new Z class trains is one of the most comfortable way to travel between Beijing and Shanghai.
Between 7pm and 8pm each day, a Z class train will leave every 7 mins and reach the other city non-stop in 12 hours flat. It is fully air conditioned, and a sleeper costs around 480 RMB.
The best part is, you can to rest peacefully for at least 6-8 hours, and the train will take you right into the city center. Beats taking a plane, where you have to worry abour getting to and from the airport, chek in and check out etc.
You can buy the tickets at the train station or ticketing office around the city.
The Bund
by easterntrekker
This refers to Shanghai's famous waterfront. Its a must do. It has lots of history of course , in 1842 it is where foreign powers entered Shanghai after the Opium Wars. Today its a place to stroll..grab and ice cream ( as we did) and look at the amzing skyline..
Watch your pockets though as there are lots of pick pockets at work here.
Historic buildings on the Bund
by meteorologist1
In the most beautiful part of downtown Shanghai, a row of old historic buildings overlook the Huangpu River. These are buildings that once housed foreign businesses such as banks and consulates. The architectural style of these buildings are also pretty Western looking. These buildings offer a great memorable view of old Shanghai, while the unobstructed view of tall skyscrapers across the river in Pudong is a breathtaking presentation of modern Shanghai. An excellent place for photos and taking a romantic evening stroll.
Shanghai 1991 - 2005

"Shanghai - changing every day"
Finally I had the opportunity to visit Shanghai again after 14 years. In 1991 I did ot see any highrise buildings on the other bank of Huangpu River, as there have not been any at that time.Nanjing Lu was a narrow and crowded street with cars. Suzhou Creek was smelling badly most of the time.
I always longed to come back and see the impressive changes, that had taken place in the last 14 years. So, when I now flew to Chongqing via Shanghai I was glad to have about 5 hours between planes, which I could use for a short sighseeing trip to the city center.
In my Shanghai page on VT I'll leave my old tips and pics from the 1991 trip unchanged. I am adding pics and and tips from my 2005-trip.
