not at all necessary to pre-book - you can book so very easily when you are in China. Most hotels have a business/travel desk where they will get you a discount flight even the day before (which is what we did last July)
We got very good deals from Shanghai to Xi'an and then Xi'an to Beijing both times just the day before.

However, buying last-minute isn't usually going to do much good if you're travelling at peak period (basically Spring Festival, and the 1st weeks of May and Oct). Feel free to drop me a VTMail if you've your travel dates and I'll try to help.

Shanghai Hongqiao Airport

by mke1963

Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport is scruffy, shabby, well-worn and is probably the vest airport in China. It's like it's run by people who have actually thought through what passengers need.
I's all held together by plyboard and pieces of string, but the flights seem to leave on time, arrive on time, and it takes just minutes for bags to turn up on the carousel.
There is - oh deep joy - a 'short distance taxi rank' if you are travelling to locations near the airport (try doing that with a taxi at Beijing Airport and learn four hundred Chinese curses by the time you hit the first speed bump).
Good selection of cafes and restaurants, good selection of shops, a post office, lounges. Check-in always seems quick.

Give me Hongqiao's efficiency over Guangzhou, Beijing or Shenzhen's architectural splendours and sterile air-side facilities.

Shopping heaven amongst ancient garden

by Icemaiden02

It took 18 years to build Yu Yuan (1559-1577), only to be destroyed during the Opium War in 1842. This Ming garden have been restored, and is now a commercially inundated bazaar filled with snacks, souveniers and personalized stamps (chops) that carry one's name (English or Chinese).

Next to the entrance to the Yu Gardens is the Mid-Lake Pavilion Teahouse (Huxinting), once part of the gardens and now one of the most famous teahouses in China, visited by Queen Elizabeth II and Bill Clinton amongst others. It is said that the zig-zag causeway thwarts evil spirits, who can only travel in straight lines.

Incidentally, saying Yu Yuan Gardens is redundant, much akin to ATM Machine (automatic teller machine machine). "Yuan" in Chinese means Gardens, hence technically it's either Yu Gardens or Yu Yuan, but not both.

Oriental Pearl TV Tower

by cheezecake_deli

468 metres high, futuristic and pink, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower - third highest in the world - is an unmistakable Shanghai landmark. The building was designed to evoke a series of different-sized pearls (the spheres) falling onto a jade plate (the base), famous lines from a Song dynasty poem on the pleasurable sounds of a Chinese musical instrument. The upper sphere observatory has panoramic 360 degrees views of the city - you can see as far as the Yangtze river! There is also a revolving restaurant, though I've never tried it out.

Admission charge is RMB100. Open daily from 0900 to 2100.

City God Temple

by Willettsworld

This lively small Taoist temple is located in the Old Town district of Nanshi. The temple was originally called the Jinshan God Temple, dedicated to the spirit of Jinshan, or "Gold Mountain", an island off the coast of Shanghai. It was converted into a City God Temple in 1403, during the Yongle era of the Ming dynasty.

During the Qing Dynasty, the temple grew popular. Residents of the old city as well as nearby areas visited the temple to pray for good fortune and peace. During the Cultural Revolution, the temple was closed down and used for other purposes. For many years, the main hall was a jewellery shop. In 1994, the temple was restored to its former use as a temple, with resident Taoist priests.
