Route Planner China/Shanghai

by gc_lon

Hi all!

We are planning a trip to China. Is there an online route planner for China/Shanghai? It's like the ones for Europe, where you put in Start point (address/postcode/place of interest etc) and Destination of where you want to go, and it gives you step by step driving directions, total travelling time, distance in km etc?

Thank you

None that I know of, in ENGLISH. I've found at least 2 in Chinese. Foreign travellers aren't allowed to self-drive in China (unless you go through a mountain of paperwork and pay through the nose) so it wouldn't be of any practical use either.

you can also get satnav thingies, but I think they're only in Chinese too!

But what are you interested in? History, culture, ethnic people, natural landscape or just a comprehensive trip? There are a lot of routes you can choose actually. Have a look at http://www.itourchina.com or http://www.travelchinaspring.com They are english websites of professional route planners. If you are interested in those routes on them, you can send email to the webmaster. There are email addresses on both of the webs.

Wish you have a nice trip in China.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Little Language Lesson

by Icemaiden02

A few things that will save your day when you go to Shanghai is to pick up a rudimentary beginner's guidebook to learning Mandarin. For bargaining purposes when shopping, most shopkeepers keep a pocket calculator handy so that you can just punch in the amount you mean instead of having to use your fingers to gesture. However, the following came in handy for my white Anglican husband when in China:

How are you? = "Ni hao ma?"
Good morning = "Zao an"
Thank you = "Xie xie"
How much? = "Duo shao?"
Too expensive! = "Tai gui!"
Don't want = "Bu yao"

Music/Movie CDs and DVDs

by bitbit about CD Shops in major departmental stores or bookshops

The music/movie CDs/DVDs are cheap! For something that I pay SGD20 for in Singapore only costs 12-15RMB in Shanghai (which is approx. SGD2-3, that's almost 10times cheaper!). 12-15RMB for music CDs. 40-50RMB for popular special edition CDs. 80-100RMB for compilations.

Brasil Steak House.

by Guantanamera about Brasil Steak House.

The Brasil Steak House, located on the west end of Huaihai Lu just opposite the Shanghai Library, is an excellent authentic Brazilian restaurant...! Went here for a dinner with Emily (VT member simcard)... This place reminded me very very much of a famous restaurant called "Porcao" in Rio de Janeiro... Just like in Rio, waiters keep coming to your table and cutting slices of meat onto your plate from big skewers... There's also a very good buffet and they serve great Brazilian caipirinhas as well...!

Oriental Pearl TV Tower

by socrates_07

We have been just few days in Shanghai and I missed to visit the tower. I think it must be a impressing view from the 468 m high Oriental Pearl TV tower. Unfortunately there were too many people which had the same idea. Anyway, it was too hazy during those days in Shanghai to have an optimal view of the city.

The Shanghai Oriental TV Tower is one of the highest in Asia. It has become a symbolic architecture and a favorable spot for tourists.

Shanghai, China

by GunnyPhillips

"Overview"

Our research told us that Shanghia would have some excellent shopping. My wife got the full experience of this, but I am not much of a shopper. I enjoyed the architecture of Shanghia more than anything else. As one of the most populous cities on earth, Shanghia has to have somewhere to house all of those people. The result of this are sprawling skyscrapers everywhere. I would describe this city as one gigantic “downtown.” The entire city is littered with multi-story buildings.

"Impressions"

I did not expect Shanghia to be quite as cold as it turned out to be. Still, we visited the Yuyuan Garden and surrounding areas. My wife paid the 30Yuan to enter the actual garden, but I chose to skip it. After spending a few hours sightseeing and photographing, I called it a day for Shanghai.

I was not prepared for the weather and could not tolerate the cold for very long. I also found the extreme crowds of people to be a bit unnerving. You've heard that China has over a billion people. Well, I suspect the majority of them are in Shanghia.
