Duty Free Shopping

by rabbit06

Hi everyone,
Can anyone please provide any information on duty free shopping at the airport and local duty free stores?
My darling Shirley does not usualy shop for beer, wine, steinlager, tabacco or electrical goods as i do.!

I haven't seen and DFS shopping in town. However non-imported beer is extremely cheap in supermarkets and convenience stores, starting from around 3 RMB for a big bottle.
I don't think the DFS shopping at the airport was anything outstanding though.

Duty free shopping is like duty free everywhere, very expensive high end goods. If you are in Shanghai, you can find plenty of things to shop for everywhere in the city at much better prices. If you are looking for a great selection of mechanical and electrical things go to Beijing road east (Beijing Dong Lu). There is a shop that specializes in mechanical instruments. You can buy a vernier caliper there that is 1 meter long! For fun shopping in an indoor flea market atmosphere, go to Xiangyang market. Directions are on my Shanghai page under shopping tips. Here is a link.

The DFS in terminal 2 (the new terminal) of Pudong Airport is quite good.

I've also seen what looks like a DFS in the Jing'an district of Shanghai, on Jiangning Road (near Xin Zha Rd). From Nanjing Road West, that's about 6 blocks north on Jiangning Rd, on the left hand side. I've never been inside though.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Shop til you drop

There are several malls, department stores, and boutiques at Nanjing Road. They sell both local and foreign brands. Really up to date in fashion trends. Well, I was able to buy a red gown, blue jeans, and white long sleeve blouse that can double as a light jacket. Did not spend much, maybe 300RMB (Yuan) for everything.

by lemon4juice about HOT POT KING

If you're looking for fun and excitement while eating, try this "SHABU-SHABU" or "HOT POT" restaurant. Vegetables and meat and some dimsum are served frozen. You have to cook these foods in large soup pot with your choice of soup base. Try the spicy Sichuan for added excitement!

Cloud 9 Skylounge in Jin Mao Tower

by lindyz

There is an observation deck in the JMT on the 88th floor, but we did not go there. Our goal this night was simply to have a drink in the highest bar in the world, the Cloud 9 Skylounge on the 87th floor. The Jin Mao Tower is the 4th tallest building in the world and the 2nd tallest in China, only second to the SWFC.

When you travel you really have to take hold of all unique opportunities that come your way. Whilst in Shanghai, we had the opportunity to have a drink in the highest bar in the world - HELL YEH!!! OF COURSE WE ARE GOING TO DO THAT - STUFF THE COST - JUST DO IT!!!

The Cloud 9 Skylounge is situated in the Jin Mao Building in Pudong, right next to the new Shanghai World Financial Centre. The easiest way to get there is to take the Subway Line 2 and get off at the first stop past Nanjing Road East, get off at Lujiazui Station, it was only 3rmb to get there from Nanjing Road East Station. Now, that is about as much as anyone told me about getting to the Cloud 9 Skylounge, BUT ... let me tell you that it is not as simple as that. Arent you lucky you have me here to tell you EXACTLY how to get there!!!

We didnt even make a reservation and as we entered the bar I had a sinking feeling that they were going to tell us they had no free tables, but they did! To get to the Jin Mao Building is pretty easy, although its a fair walk from the subway station. We entered the building, looking for signs to the Cloud 9 Skylounge, but found none anywhere. We asked several people, who kept pointing us in the wrong direction. We were going up and down lifts and elevators and getting nowhere. So, we asked what looked like a westerner tourist and he pointed us to the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

OK .... so now here are your directions. Find the elevator to the Grand Hyatt Hotel and take it to the 54th floor. You then have to change lifts and take another elevator to the 85th floor. You then have to YET AGAIN change lifts and take your final elevator to the 87th floor!!! Now, by this time you are very confused and very thirsty so in need of liquid respite! But ... hold onto your wallets, cos drinks up here dont come cheaply!!!

Tracy and I both had 2 drinks and we shared a rather modest cheese platter (thats basically about all we could afford!) and the bill was indeed the dearest food/drink bill on our whole China trip! I had 2 Cosmopolitan Cocktails at 90rmb each and Tracy had 2 Chardonays at 85rmb each and the cheese platter cost 110rmb - total bill of 529rmb!!! Half of that equals $46AUD each - WOW what a price to pay just to say you have been to the highest bar in the world! There is also a 15% surcharge (I call it a tip!) on top of your bill,l but all in all, I would say it was worth it. When we first got there, there was only very light cloud coverage and we had good views of the Pearl Tower, but about half an hour later, the dreaded cloud rolled in again, and we could see absolutely nothing!

Shanghai - di mata budget traveller

"The Bund"

The Bund termasuk katagori "must see" di Shanghai dimana kita bisa melihat bangunan-bangunan yang sangat menawan. Sungai Huangpu membelah the Bund menjadi dua bagian, Pudong (bangunan-bangunan moderen) dan Puxi (bangunan-bangunan klasik).

"Madame Tussaud Shanghai"

berikut beberapa diantara patung lilin pesohor: Obama, Nelson Mandela, Yao Ming, Jackie Chan, Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Marilyn Monroe, Arnold, Sly, Hugh Grant, James Bond, Bruce Lee dll...
