I am sure that you would be able to get a taxi to another hotel in Shanghai closer to where the action is. Shanghai is a big city and there is a lot going on during the night. I would explore this option more closely. Try to get a hotel near Nanjing Road.
In terms of getting from Shanghai to Nanjing try a train. We did it the other way round...Nanjing to Shanghai. It was easy. and..we don't speak Chinese.
Watch out for the scams in Shanghai!!!

Motel 168 is a chain of hotels located in various areas of Shanghai. So suggest you to choose the one that is nearer to Nanjing road. Motel 168 is ok as i stayed onle night in one of them.
After arrival suggest you to take airport bus to the area where your hotel is located.you can check airport bus here:http://www.shanghaiairport.com/en/pd.jsp?categoryId=OUT_CON_B0100.
You can take the first starting bus at 7am or if you can afford you can take a taxi to your hotel.
You don't need to stay near Pudong airport as the distance between Pudong airport and the city centre is too big.Once you are in city cente , you can take a metro or a bus to go various shopping malls located in various areas.
It is ok if you don't know chinese but keep a dictionary of key words/sentences of Chinese to English-chinese.If you don't have, you can get it in any of the book shops in shanghai.
Strongly suggest you to remember following:
..Take the chinese written card of the hotel where you stay so that you can show it to taxi driver to bring you back to your hotel inase you lose your way or in urgency.Taxi people , generally, don't understand the english name of the hotel.
..Ask your hotel/or someone to write down the name of the place where you wish to go in Chinese so that passers-by can guide you correctly.
You can get western food as there are many KYC,McDonalds near most of the shopping malls.
Have a nice trip.

There's a branch of Motel168 (it's a franchise) in Pudong airport, but not within the transit area.
From Pudong airport, the next morning you could take the airport shuttle, Maglev + metro, Maglev + taxi or direct taxi to Nanjing Lu pedestrian street. It all depends on how much luggage you have and how much you're ok with spending.
Yes, there's KFC and other eating places inside Pudong airport. Again, don't eat in the transit area as all the places there are expensive. Look for KFC and others located in the Maglev terminal.
Travel Tips for Shanghai
High-end shops in the heart of expatriate Puxi...
by cheezecake_deli about Nanjing West Road
Before Pudong was built, many expatriates located their offices and homes in Nanjing West Road (Nanjing Xi Lu) in the Jing'an district of Puxi. Today, cosmopolitan Nanjing West Road is home to some of the most famous and poshest shopping malls in Shanghai. Most international designer brands have at least one boutique somewhere here. Famous malls include the Shanghai Centre, Plaza 66 and Westgate Mall. It's sometimes hard to imagine who would shop regularly in these shops, but, hey, there must be enough filthy rich people in Shanghai! Designer stuff I suppose. Genuine designer items usually cost more in China than elsewhere because of tax.

Nanjing Road
by rochellevm
Nanjing Road is the main shopping street of Shanghai. It is also known for luxurious shopping centres. It is also a colorful street by day and night. From the Nanjing Road, you can see a part of the Orient Pearl TV Tower. If you're into shopping, make sure to pass by Nanjing Road when you're in Shanghai.
The Shanghai Experience
by screamcheese
One thing I love about Shanghai is the fashion sense of people working and living here. It was a bit cold at the time we visited Shanghai and while we reached for our jackets, the locals were in their trench coats and hip outfits. You should try their milk teas available in most of their convenient stores. Though food wasn't that great, i enjoyed touring around...
When you've decided where to shop, avail for huge discounts. People here overprice their items especially when they detect that you're a tourist willing to spend 3x more!!!
