Cruise leaving from Shanghai. Do I need a Visa for overnight stay prior to cruise departure?
by jilltcnj
Hello,
I am a US citizen, and was wondering if anyone can help me with this question. I went on the Chinese Embassy website and it seems like as long as I don't stay for more than 48 hours in Shanghai, all I need is my passport; however, their website is not very straight forward. Other sites say I need proof of leaving the country within the 48 hours, would my cruise information be sufficient for that? Has anyone done this with any problems? I would want to stay overnight in Shanghai and then leave for the cruise the next day, as the flight options are very limited and I would not be able to make the cruise departure time if I arrived the day of the cruise.

HI,have just left shanghai, how are you entering shanghai?your cruise information should be ok to show where you going, we had the same concerns as we were entering ,but had no set departure dates, just an itinerary. If you are Flying in i suspect you will need a visa, the chinese are good , dont worry to much, but they are sticklers for documentation,we were not allowed to leave and enter vietnam as our visa did not begin till the following day.I woulkd keep it simple and get a visa, and enjoy shanghai its a great place. please read my shanghai pages , might help you.And you may want to get on the big bus tour, see alot of the city,as it big.have fun

I would be entering shanghai on a plane, I think I am just going to pay for the expensive visa and play it safe like you suggested. Better safe than sorry!

In your case you will need a visa but it will be a G visa. This is an extract from the Chinese Embassy in Australia. As an American you need this visa even if transiting and staying in airport where as Australians don't if they are staying only in the airport.

Were you looking at http://www.china-embassy.org/eng/ywzn/lsyw/vpna/rap/t710627.htm ? That seems straightforward enough for me, you need a G visa.
Alternatively, I think if you apply for a China visa in the US with a US passport, you "automatically" get a 1-year multi-entry visa.
Travel Tips for Shanghai
The greatest thing about...
by Jim_Eliason
The greatest thing about travel is the bizarre things that happen sometimes. I am sitting in Renmin Park waiting for the Shanghai Museum to open and marvelling what a strange and unfamiliar place China was. Then I heard a Frank Sinatra song playing. I turned my head and saw a bunch of people in formal dress ballroom dancing in the park. How surreal! Evidently it was a fad there to gather in parks and dance ballroom.
By Car ...
by Tal_A
By Car ---------------------------------------------
Traffic in Shanghai is chaotic and exasperating because of the sheer number of bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, pedestrians, cars, buses, and trucks simultaneously vying for the right-of-way. The best tactic is to thread your way carefully and steadily among the vehicles.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------
Car Rentals
Car rentals are not recommended and generally not available in China. Some local rentals are available in Shanghai, but only for driving within the city. It is possible, however, to hire a car with a driver for the day, and the costs are reasonable. In China, check with your hotel concierge or local CTS office about car hires. Many hotels also have bicycles for rent at very inexpensive day rates.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------
Requirements
In China your own driver's license is not acceptable. An International Driver's Permit is a required; it's available from the American or Canadian automobile association, or, in the United Kingdom, from the Automobile Association or Royal Automobile Club.
Shanghai World Financial Centre

This is now the tallest building in Pudong soaring to a height of 492 metres and in fact the 2nd tallest building in the world! It was only opened on August 28th, 2008, so lucky for us, we were able to visit it. Unfortunately, by the time we got there, the cloud coverage had well and truly set in and we got to see very little from the 100th floor. You have an option to go to either the 94th, 97th or 100th floor and the cost for the 100th floor was 150rmb = about $26AUD. I think thats a small price to pay for being able to say you had "done" the 2nd tallest building in the world!
This building is known to Shanghai people as "The bottle opener" for obvious reasons, in that it looks just like a bottle opener. It is about a 15-20 minute walk from the OPT and located right next to the Jin Mao Tower.
Well worth a visit, just try and make sure you plan your day around clear skies for optimal views! It was quite eerie being up in the clouds, every so often they would clear just a little bit and we would get an obscure view of the top of the JM Tower. The skywalk on the 100th floor is the worlds highest observatory and has a glass bottom floor 474 metres above ground!
Huangpu Jiang.

Here is the large and very polluted Huangpu Jiang itself, as viewed from the Bund... The buildings in the background with the large signage reminiscent of Hong Kong Island, are in the area around Gongpinglu Wharf and the International Ferry Terminal...
