Hotel near PVG
by sunset_gal
I need some urgent help. Is there a decent and safe hotel located near the PVG airport? One of my friends will be on transit from 9 pm to 6 am. Would be great if the hotel is nearby and easily accessible. How much would a single cost? And how far is it from the airport? Thanks in advance!

Ramada Pudong is very close to the airport, about 5 minutes. And the hotel provides shuttle bus as well.

I have stayed there in the past and is very convenient and safe (in my opinion)

Are there any other choices? This costs around 95 euros for 1 night.

I've seen a couple of cheaper options around, but the reviews don't think too highly of their cleanliness. Is that a priority with you?

Not clean as in a tad dusty, musty smell or downright dirty with cockroaches running around?? The first is not a problem but the second would be!! Do you have the hotel names? Are they easily accessible from PVG? How can one get to these hotels from the airport?

You might want to try Home Inns (Longdong branch) which has rooms at 208 RMB, not including breakfast (an extra 10 RMB). There's apparently free shuttle to/from Pudong airport. There're cheaper and smaller rooms for 168 RMB but these don't enjoy the free shuttle service, so I think it might be worth splurging a bit more for the more expensive rooms. I think the cleanliness level reported is ok, not too bad. :)

Thanks for the info. It sounds quite ok! Where did you read about the free shuttle service? Is there an online site where I could book this?
I also found one which is a bit more ex at USD35, Jin Li Hua, which is about 13 km from the airport. How far is Home Inns?

Hmmm, I'm not too sure about the exact distance, but I guess I could probably look it up if you're really interested. Could you please drop me a VTMail? I tried sending VTMail but it doesn't seem to work, maybe there's some problem with the server.
Travel Tips for Shanghai
Packing List
by imstress
travel light because you can buy cheap luggages or suitcase for about US$3-10. in winter, bring at least a jacket that can block off the chilly wind. bring your medications from home. you may not be able to buy the exact medication or they maybe fake. most medication are written in chinese and you wont know if your stomach can take it. bring a digital camera that can take good night pictures. I was using Sony P32, Pentax Optio and Sony DV camera for all my photos. Bring lots of storage capacity. We had an external drive so our cameras were clicking non stop;p

Once you are in Shanghai, there are many maps you can buy, mostly in Chinese. They even sell them on the Metro.
The below web site in an online street map of downtown Shanghai.
The web site below is an online street map of Shanghai and is clearer then the photo in this tip. Many of the major streets have both the English and Chinese names on the map. The web site has additional up to date information.

Seven Silver Stars (Qi Yin Xing) Indoor Ski park
by zquek
Basically, its one of the largest indoor ski park in the world. Its slopes are at least half a kilometer long. Gradient are different for beginners and advanced. Instructors are avaiblable to hire by the hour, which is really cheap by western standard... about 10 USD per hour... Total cost including all equipment for two hours (with instructor for an hour) is about 20USD...
Shopping in Nanjing Street
by K.Knight
Nanjing Street is regarded as the main shopping street in Shanghai. (There is however a rival area in the French Connection, located on Huaihai Lu.)
The street runs between two major tourist attractions, the Bund and the People Park which houses the Shanghai Museum. As a result, the combination of foot traffic, tourists, shoppers and diners makes this a busy street.
There are several “trains” that are 2 Yuan each to ride. These trains travel all day and night between the Bund end of the street and the Peoples Park end. Shoppers, and tourists, with weary legs will often take a ride to relax and get out of the sun.

While Shanghai is a very large city, it is getting easier to get around. The new subway system is fast, clean and efficient, albeit crowded during rush hour. Locals are proud of it and readily help desperate foreigners. Get out of the tour busses and explore.
