Century Square
by cheezecake_deli
The largest public square in Shanghai is a new creation - the modern Century Square in the heart of Pudong. It felt a bit soulless, an expanse of concrete surrounded by modern architecture, with a few people flying kites (a popular pastime in squares, it seems). Nearest metro: Century Square.
Wu Jiang Lu Food Street
by sacrebleu about Xiao He
Xiao He at No.54 Wu Jiang Lu near the beginning of the food street was my first stop. Named after the restaurant's kitten, little blackie, Xiao He is a very small shop with only 3 tables. However, it's a must try for oyster lovers. Grilled oysters and seafood are freshly prepared on a small hot stove outside this tiny restaurant. They also do take aways and all restaurants in Wu Jiang Lu welcome to bring other food in. Half a dozen of oysters/scallops at an affordable price of $30.
Fun in the French Concession!
by HooptheWorld
For sure you will enjoy the French Concession...try the Boonna Cafe, on Xinle Rd., as it is a fabulous place to relax, use the internet, meet people, eat some good panini sandwiches, get a cup of joe...very bohemian and relaxed. The shops in this area are wonderfully small, eclectic and tempting. Also, Garden Bookstore has incredible books on Shanghai (etc.) that are not available anywhere else...and just walking around. (have to admit the Starbucks here has the best pudding cakes!).
We found the Jinjiang hotel to be historic as well as convenient. It has the best beds. The City Hotel is decent too, with reasonable rates and a delightful cafe area with many (free) newspapers and magazines.
The Ritz Carleton was a treat, and is an area that offers a lot of opportunities for walking around some historic sites. They offer specials , so check their website.
Have fun.!!
We found that walking around without an agenda yielded the best, most serendipitous experiences.
The people of Shanghai were extremely helpful, kind and receptive.
Soong Ching Ling former residence
by sunnywong
Song Qingling, (1893-1981) was wife of Dr Sun Yatsen, founder of the Republic of China and one of the famous "Soong Sisters". She has been described as one of China outstanding women of the 20th century and was a great advocate of civil rights, democracy and freedom from aggression.
All the interior furnishings in Song's former home are as they were in her lifetime. Visitors can visit the living room where Song held meetings with Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai. In the front annex, you can read her correspondence with famous leaders as Jawaharlal Nehru and Joseph Stalin, as well as personal family letters.
