Stay at a hostel when you get there for a week and find a apartment near your study through friend you meet there or classified ads from expats. Craigslist may help also. Good luck

All major universities provide a guesthouse for foreign students. If you plan to study at a private school, ask them about rooms on their campus or near. Other than a uni guesthouse, don't agree to any housing before you see it and meet the manager / owner.

Are you planning to study at a university? If so, the university will most probably have accommodation available on campus, at an international students dormitory. These typically have twin-sharing as well as single rooms. Currently I'm at Fudan University, rent here is 60/90 RMB/day for twin-sharing/single room, with ensuite. This includes all water and electricity, but not Internet nor TV.
There're also places to rent in the university area here (Yangpu district), but if you're alone, you're not too likely to find anything cheaper than staying in a twin-sharing room in school.

hi luisa76,
I'm a french student and I came in shanghai on January to study.
I've got a short budget. Moreover I wanted to have like a "chinese" experience of everyday life, so I found a good compromise by renting a room in a local chinese apartment. I just put homestay on google and I found a website that prupose different areas: homestayglobal.com
I'm still living in shanghai.
If you want more information.

Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao Day

by imstress

This is how Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao Restaurant looks like in the day time.

Even in the day, there are long queue for the Xiao Long Bao.

As there is a brige that will connect to Yu Yuan, many would love to take a pic here of the surrounding and of the architecture.

Perfect Thai food in Shanghai! Plus a good bar!

by Malinka about Face

The place is located in the beautiful historical area and serves as a local meeting point for foreigners and chinese alike. the building consists of 2 restaurants: Hazara ( North Indian Frontier Cuisine), La Na Thai (Classical Thai Cuisine) and a Face Bar.
Both restaurants have beautiful interior. The service is one of the best i have seen in China. You can have good wine too.
Face Bar has variety of coctail and happy-hour time. atmostphere -backpackers and chinese students, relaxed and fun. They provide absolutely delicious Thai starters for free!

A Bit Crowed at the Yu Garden

by MarianneRules

I love the gardens and landscaping that I saw in China. I never thought of myself as an earthy botanical gardeny type, but there was something about the symmetry and natural beauty combined that appealed to me. This is probably proof that Fung Shui (sp?) does make sense?? My favotire picture of the trip is inside the garden.

The down side is the crowds. The shops outside the garden are packed with people. That whole area looks like a Chinese movie set. It’s hard to tell what is really ancient and what was built last week. It’s 100% tourist spot in my opinion.

Peace Hotel South.

by Guantanamera

The Peace Hotel South, formerly called the Palace Hotel, was built in 1906 and is most well known as the location for the meeting of the International Opium Commission which took place in February of 1909 after an initiative by the U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt, setting a framework for the international control of narcotics... Pictured here, is the plaque outside the building, commemorating the meeting...
