Ping Pong in Shanghai
by doogienj
Greetings,
I'm planning a trip to Shanghai in early April to work on a personal photography project about ping pong, aka table tennis. I'm interested in public venues where people play, like parks, or street locations, work environments, and to learn and photograph how ping pong fits into the Chinese culture.
So any suggestion you may have on venues, locations, events, or players regarding ping pong would be much appreciated!
Cheers,
Douglas

Douglas, did you not already ask this question a few months back? Im pretty sure you did, or else Im loosing my marbles!!!

No, you're not losing your marbles, at least not yet:) I did ask a similar question but about Beijing. Based on advise from several people I'm planning to change my plans from Beijing to Shanghai.
I'm also more interested in the modern architecture and maybe paying a visit to the World Expo.
Cheers,
Douglas

ok Douglas, glad that I wasnt imagining it, I just had the wrong city!!!
Yes indeed, the architecture in Shanghai is out of this world. Take a look at some of my pics and tips on my Shanghai page, the 3 main tall buildings being the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Jin Mao Tower and the newest Shanghai World Financial Centre, all of which I recently visited and loved.
Cheers :)

PS - World Expo would be amazing to visit, but also very very hectic and chaotic, and Im not entirely sure how Shanghai can get even more chaotic than when we visited, which was just a normal day!!!

Not sure if university gyms fit into your definition of "public venues"?

There's a famous PingPang school in my community -- Cao Yanhua Table Tennis Training School. Please see this page for a introduction of the school: http://www.tomveatch.com/tt/caoyanhua.school.html.
There are many young players living in the school dorms and trained everyday. Xuxin, who is a great player in China national team now, was gradated from this school. here's a report about Xuxin and this school: http://mytabletennis.net/Forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=31906&PID=388533. I like pingpang myself, but just an amateur. Some comunity has tables in their yard for public practicing. Some companies have table in their office rooms for the employee's to play. When you come here, you may contact me for some introducing.
Travel Tips for Shanghai
Clothes wholesale market
by jackiesg about Shanghai Qi Pu Lu
Haha! My hotel happened to oversee a clothes wholesale market and so we went! Hugh, each building is around 4 to 5 storeys high and there are at least around 5 buildings in that area selling wholesale clothes.
Shanghai is famous for it's clothes being trendy and well tailored. Indeed, the clothes I saw at the various clothes wholesale buildings, are, of better quality than those I found in Guangzhou. Clothes, hats, undergarments, stockings, socks, jackets etc. Many stalls attend to retail sales too. Wholesale price if you're buying whoelsale. You can still bargain there even if you're buying retail (means you are buying only a piece of two, not bulk).
A good restaurant for German Food
by Paul2001 about The Paulener Brauhaus
Believe or not, the last dinner I ate in China was in a German restaurant. How can I explain this? I had grown tired of Chinese food and I just love German food. This is a good place to go to forget that you are in China. The Paulener Brauhaus is in a large mansion where it occupies a couple of floors. Once you step inside you think you arrive in Bavaria. The bottom level is more of a bar where there is entertainment. The night I visited there was a Filipino group doing rock/pop. Upstairs is the actual restaurant. I had a good meal but to be honest I thought that it was a tad overpriced. The restaurant also brews its own beer which you should check out. I had pork sausages that were satisfactory. The potatoes were especially good. I would suspect that you cannot go wrong with the schnitzel.
One of the best in the world !!!!!
by jlanza29
I must say this musuem is on par with any musuem in the world. The Lourve in Paris, The MET in New York, The Prado in Madrid. It is one of the best musuems in the world !!!! Come with plenty of time, there is 6 floors with interconnecting rooms. You name it they have it when it comes to the Chinese culture. All the signs and directions are in English. The staff is as helpful as they can be. I must say this was one of my favorite places in all of Shanghai. But be forwarned, when they close they rush you out literally in 5 minutes. Guards come in a yell, and tell you out, out .....I'm sure they could find a better way of telling you to leave, but they were effective...the whole place was cleared out in 5 minutes !!!!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT !!!!!
People's Park.
by Guantanamera
Pictured here are the green trees of the People's Park... Note the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, in the background... The park contains other cultural institutions as well, such as the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Art Gallery, and the Shanghai Grand Theatre... The park area itself is rather small, with few trees, and not much respite from the urban jungle surrounding...
