Are you asking for the city to stay or the area in Shanghai to stay?

As it is in the Shanghai forum I think you can assume she wants advice re Shanghai.

Besides Shanghai, recommend you consider one or two other nearby cities to get some variety. Possible destinations would be Nanjing (long history and several interesting historical sites); Suzhou (gardens, popular tourist location); and Hangzhou (West Lake, a very popular tourist spot; also silk and tea production). All can be reached conveniently from Shanghai by express train, a few hours train ride max.

See the individual city listings for details on attractions. Regards,

I would opt to stay around People's Square/Nanjing Lu pedestrian street (not the Bund, definitely) or the French Concession area, within comfortable walking distance of a metro stop.
In that price range, I would probably suggest A-Live Design Hotel, Lijing Hotel, Shangfu Holiday Hotel or Seventh Heaven Hotel.
When would you be in Shanghai? Feel free to email me at ellyse99@yahoo.com if you have more queries (do put "VirtualTourist" and your own username in the subject line), I've been studying in Shanghai for the past 6 years.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Xiangyang Market in Shanghai - CLOSED permanently

by crewrower about Xiangyang Market - Closed

If you had ever been to the Xiangyang market in Shanghai, you probably either loved the place, and bought all your Christmas presents for friends and family there, or you hated the selling tactics of vendors, and vowed never to go back.

If you had never been to the Xiangyang market, TOO LATE! The Xiangyang Market was closed at the end of June, 2006. The area has been targeted for a development project. You will see many recommendations for Xiangyang market on VT, but note that the Xiangyang market no longer exists! .

I expect the closing to amount to a displacement of the vendors, not a permanent shut down. But it is unlikely that a market of such massive size will reopen anywhere in Shanghai.

Cheap and Great

by clumsybee about Nangka Cafe

I bumped into this cafe by chance. A small but cosy and sleek cafe serving sandwiches with homemade bread & pastries, coffee, juices, smoothies...The food was great and to my surprise, it was cheap. I only spent around RMB30 for a large sandwich, pineapple puffs and a green smoothie. They also offer internet for free. I was glad that I took some steps further from Xintiandi to enjoy my meal at Nangka Cafe. Curry chicken sandwich - the spiciness was just right, love the bread
Pineapple puffs - made with real pineapple
Green smoothie - cucumber juice, celery juice, honey...all blend to a very refreshing drink

Shanghai Grand Theatre

by Corinneao

Definitely go see a show while you are there- it's a different experience. We saw the Wild Zebra and thought it was very good. If you are with someone who speaks Chinese, you can scalp tickets outside before the show for much cheaper.

No. 1 Provisions Store

by Willettsworld

The No. 1 Provisions Store opened in 1926 as the Sun Sun store and is a marvellous place to visit even if you're not anticipating on buying anything. The store offers as many kinds of foods as you can imagine. Healthy food, snacks, tourist food, family food and gift are the five main categories. If you plan to go food shopping or you are just hunger for nibbles, this store is a good choice.
