We can only do one during this trip next year in March. Which city is better? From what I read, Zhou Zhuang seems to do a better marketing job, but some people complain it is too commercialized. Any recommendations?
I have been the two water town, in my opinion, regard to commercialization, there is no difference, Wuzhen is also too commercialized. Wuzhen is smaller than zhouzhuang. Zhouzhuang has more tour interests than zhouzhuang. I recommend zhouzhuang.
Zhouzhuang would be my last choice, anytime, anywhere. Wuzhen wouldn't be much better. I'd instead recommend Xitang on a weekday. If you're willing to venture further, there're more choices for less commercialised villages in Zhejiang province.
Any attempt to cross the roads in Shanghai is a major challenge. Drivers have no common road sense, and they will turn into an intersection with no regards of the right of way, nor the fact that many pedestrians are walking on it. I think every driver believes anybody with legs will have enough time to run away from their cars.
I still have "fear of mad cars syndrome" when attempting to cross a road this day, six weeks after my departure from Shanghai.
I exp traveling quite a bit in the local taxi in Shanghai they have a metered system hence you are safe from getting cheated... you have to insist on the ticket when u depart from the cab you can always verify the charge from your hotel just in case... Its not to expensive either... though Engish is a problem i suggest you write down the destination and try to ensure your driver know it too
I tried the local metro which was also good, information about stations are also dispalyed in English a major boon.
Friend gave me a tip to visit this area of modern art and I really like it! Ask on the reception to write the name of the district so you can show it to your cab driver because they don't read or speak English. When you reach the place, you will see buildings with galleries inside. If you decide to buy a piece of art, you might have difficulties with paying in some galleries. Take a cash with you.
There are a number of Acrobatic Theaters in Shanghai.
The acrobats, like the gymnasts at the Olympics, appear to be no older than 14 or 15 but their feats of contortion and high wire exploits are very impressive indeed. As the show goes on the acrobats seem to get older as the routines get harder and harder.
The final 2 acts of the night are death defying feats of human agility and stamina. Up to 6 motorbikes speeding around a steel globe is one of the most incredible things I have seen!
The entire show lasts for approx 1 hour and 45 minutes and costs 170 Yuan.
