Local Crafts
by JEKIE2 about Yu Yuan Market
Yu Yuan Market is the perfect place to buy Chinese local products, there are so many shops to choose from with varying prices plus you can also drop by the Yu Gardens and explore its beautiful grounds.
Items here are cheaper than those you find in department stores. You can bargain with the shop keepers w/c is actually the fun part. I was able to buy Chinese Blouses (cheongsam) and kid's pajamas. A tea set, chinese bags and antique hardware.
There are antiques and imitation antiques, since I am no expert I just think of them all as fakes so I haggle pretty low. The tea set w/c is good for 6 was 100rmb the chinese bags were 10-15rmb. Normally, when they give a price always bargain at least 50% off.
A bit overrated !!!!
by jlanza29 about M on the Bund
I have to say this place isn't bad, but it isn't the best in Shanghai like everyone says. The service is OK, the wine list is extensive and expensive, and the menu is a bit short on the selections. So after going to Laris (please read my other travel tip) the night before we were disappointed with the food here. The place was crowded and loud, and snagging a table on the terrace is almost impossible. Do go outside and enjoy the best view without a doubt of the Bund. Worth the trip here just for the view !!!!! Had slow roasted leg of lamb....tasty, but expensive !!!!
The true Old Town of Shanghai
by tremendopunto
A must see in Shanghai is certainly the Old Town of Shanghai. And I am not talking about the the new tourist traps built close around the YuYuan Garden, where only strange souvenirs are offered. Skip that and check the narrow alleys surroundung it. Streets with houses not higher than two storeys, no sewer system except the cans in front of the doors in the morning and washed clothes hanging over the streets from one house to another. This is the last part of the true old city. There are no tourist shops but busy Chinese shops, street kitchens and market alleys, where Chinese people shop. Everything is vivid and relaxed at the same time, because there are no cars, no modern progress disturbing the scenery.
But steel and concrete is already at the gates! Skyscrapers are coming closer each time I get to Shanghai.
I hope that even dispite the missing luxury of modern living that some people might miss, some parts get protected like the Hutongs in Beijing.

"My China Trip"
I went to China for an overseas educational program with the University of Minnesota. My graduate school sponsered event lasted for a couple of weeks and we visited Shanghai and Beijing. All in all it was an incredible experience that I would love to do again.
