Le Meridien She Shan Resort
They don't come mucm more opulent - or expensive - than at Le Meridien She Shan hotel at the heart of the She Shan resort outside Shanghai. They also don't come much more deserted, and I guess there were only around eight rooms occupied on a Friday - what should be the busiest night of the week. You cannot fault the location, in an oasis of trees, lakes and Shanghi's Alp, the highest point in the municipality.
Quite why such an awesome display of sumptuous furnishings and cavernous rooms has been built here is anyone's guess. One night's stay (RMB 1200) is about a month's salary locally, and despite the beautiful - if somewhat contrived - landscaped surroundings, you have to woder about the rationale for having a 5 star hotel here. But this is China, and China is a country where rationale for hotel building is largely vested in people who have no idea about the travel market.
The hotel is huge and looks suspiciously like the losing bid in an airport terminal architecture building: huge slabs of glass, curved aluminium cladding and long, impossibly wide corridors.
The rooms are ultra-modern, and cavernous. i have stayed in 5 star hotels in China whose bedrooms are smaller than the bathroom at the Meridien She Shan. The whole room oozes class and style, with a vast flat-screen TV hanging on a the wall above a DVD player. An enormous circular seat-cum-sofa sits by the picture glass window. Beyond is a balcony and a fine view of agricultural suburban Shanghai. The bathroom has a stand-alone bath and is all sweeping curves and soft lighting.
Unique Quality: The hotel has fabulous facilities - all of them empty, and behind is a lake with a white sand beach.
It's a wonderful hotel. But empty.
