Health issues for 5 month old
by diane73
We are planning to visit friends in Shanghai and Beijing in May 2011 and our son will be 5 months old. Our doctor who is chinese advised we should not go as swine flu and other viruses are at their peak at this time and it won't be safe for our baby as he has not had all his immunisations and is not able to have the swine flu injection. Just wondering if anyone has travelled with a baby this age and what your thoughts are. We are not sure what to do. Thanks.

Your doctor is quite correct to be cautious and would be negligent if he didn't advise you of the risk (which in the case of influenza-type infection is a considerable one if you are planning to visit a heavily populated region).
I have been in similar positions in the past and have always put the health of my children before any other considerations. However a thorough analysis of the actual risk is also advisable. You should, for example, check with your friends in Shanghai and Beijing regarding what measures are taken locally, if any, to minimise the risk for their own infants. If they sound satisfactory, and can be made to apply in your case too, then this is a factor in weighing your decision.
Personally I would err on the side of caution. Many don't, and get away with it. An unlucky few take a chance and lose (neighbours of mine who travelled with an infant against advice and are now one member less in the family spring to mind).

If your doctor recommends not taking a baby on this trip why do you ask non-medical people what their opinions are?
We are all people who travel. We are not doctors (except in the occasional poster is travels and is also a doctor) :)
Medical issues should be answered by physicians, not travellers.

I have dragged my daughters all over the world, starting when they were about 5 months old. The oldest did not get to a developing country until she was almost two, our youngest did got to a developing country at 10 months, BUT will some really careful vetting / advice from the doctor. She did get sick, but with the excellent medical care that was available to us, things never got too serious.
I would suggest that you listen to the advice of your doctor. Immature immune systems and low body weight are both not working in favour of going to China now. We did take our youngest all over China when she was about 22 months old, and things worked out quite nicely on that trip.
Travel Tips for Shanghai
Frenchtown
by bhemak
A neighborhood of buildings that were once the French concession are of mild interest. The French left numerous buildings in a colonial style. The area is mostly south of Huaihai Lu. It is semi-interesting at best. There is no place you can stand and say, "Yes, this is Frenchtown." You just walk around and notice a building here or half of one there. It is fun to remember you are in China as it looks nothing like the rest of the country.
MotorCycle Taxi
by simcard
If you see these guys by the streets, they are the motorcycle "taxi" drivers. I heard it is much cheaper to get a ride from them than a ride from real taxi, but I won't take my chance! It is just not safe!
The base of the Pearl TV tower...
by zizquark
The base of the Pearl TV tower where you can purchase tickets to either of the various levels. Located opposite the Bund in Pudong. A nice way to get there is to take the Bund tourist tunnel . It's a short train ride through a tunnel with flashing light dispalys like a Disney ride.
Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre
by cheezecake_deli
Shanghai's Urban Planning Exhibition Centre, located on the northern side of People's Square (Ren Min Guang Chang) by People's Avenue (Ren Min Da Dao), is actually not a bad place to start your visit to Shanghai. The centre showcases the architectural history and future of the city. There are faded photographs and maps of old Shanghai, as well as exhibits on the future urban structure of the megacity. The exhibition is quite extensive, covering not just the development of commercial Pudong, but also outlying satellite towns and issues involved in managing the growth of a city of Shanghai's scale. The highlight is a model of the city envisioned in 2020, which occupies a whole floor and which can be viewed at eye level or from above.
Entry fee is RMB30.
