Mingtown Intl Hiker Youth Hostel

MINGTOWN Hiker International Youth Hostel
No. 450 Middle Jiangxi Rd. Shanghai. P.R.China

We stayed in this hostel for one night only and booked through hostelworld.com. We arrived in the morning tired from our 13hr train journey back from Beijing. The hostel staff on duty was prompt and in a matter of minutes we were resting our tired bodies on our beds. We booked a mixed dorm rm for RMB85 per bed per night. Though it is RMB10 pricier than our previous hostel, it was worth it with the bigger lobby, restaurant, nicer CR and nicer staff. It is also wi-fi free zone in the lobby and resto area. Check-out the next day was also a breeze. At the time, taxis are not allowed to enter the hostel's exact street so we got off at a street across and walked.

Unique Quality: very cozy lobby and restaurant which are both wi-fi free zones
for rmb8 (i think) you can wash your laundry
very nice bathrooms and showers

For the Budget Traveller

MINGTOWN People's Square Youth Hostel No.35 Yong Shou Road Huangpu District
phone. +86-21-63287511 email. mingtown@foxmail.com

This is where we stayed for 1 night. We emailed the staff beforehand that we will arrive late in the evening, 11PM but we're surprised that the staff was not too friendly when we arrived. We were too tired and just grateful to be handed our key. We booked a mixed dorm rm. The hostel had no escalator/elevator so dragging your luggages to 3 flights of stairs is quite a task. They have restaurant but we didn't have the chance to try the menu. What's good here is that you can bring your own food and eat breakfast quietly outside the floor lobby where tables and chairs are provided. At the time, cold water was not available maybe because it's already cold outside (haha!) The hostel staff who arranged our check-out the following day made up for the previous day's mishap. They even wrote the People Square stn in Chinese characters for the taxi driver.

Unique Quality: Their rate is cheap: RMB75 per bed for the mixed dorm rms. We booked through hostelworld.com which proved to be reliable. Their location is also great because it is just in a street near Yan'an elevated pedestrian walkway. They have hot/cold shower, hot water and a resto inside.

Mingtown Hiker International Youth Hostel

Cool hostel - the bar was good and had a free pool table. The showers were good, and there were kitchen facilities on each floor. It has a great location, near the Nanjing Road, subway station, and the Bund. The staff were pretty good. There was free internet with WIFI. Pretty good hostel all round.

Affordable, clean & quite convenient

We stayed in the dorm, 8-bedded and cost me 40 yuan a night (Hostel International member). My daughter is not a member and had to pay 45 yuan. The bathroom and toilet are in the room. No window looking out. No toilet paper but there is in the toilet on the ground floor. We had to bathe in a slower flowing shower as the outlet for bath water wasn't that good. Seems common in China hostels.

The place is clean and the service friendly, quite good. They charge for left luggage although they say it is free on the www.hostelworld.com web site. 4 laptops available for free internet use. We were there in the low season so it wasn't difficult to get one to use. There is a pantry area on the 2nd floor (1st flr in China) where you can make a simple meal like sandwiches.

Laundry costs 10 yuan a bag. Hot water available foc. In winter, the air cond substitutes as a heater but we seldom turned it on since it wasn't that cold in the cold.

They have a cafeteria but we never ate there because we could get cheaper local food outside.

We stayed there twice, a total of 7 days.

Unique Quality: It is in a central location, near to the Bund and Nanjing East Road. Both places are about 15 mins walk away. Clean place and in a safe area, even though the streets are quite emplty at night. Some eateries nearby but the food isn't that good except for the restaurant a few doors away - Hai Hong Restaurant. See my tip page on Restaurant.

Buy drinking water more cheaply from the small shop to the left of the hostel, about 2-3 doors away.

Has comfortable mattress and warm bedding, important during winer.
