Shanghai General

by nospam

Just got back from Shanghai and other places. We went in as the dumbest newbies and left two weeks later about the same although enlighted about photographic opportunities (or not), knock-offs, general shopping, subways, etc. Drop me a line if you think I can help.
Cheers.

Use your travel pages here on VT to tell everyone of your holiday to Shanghai.
Once on there the information such as hotels, restaurants. things to see and places to go can be shared with everyone who cares to look at your pages.
Your posting on the travel forum will soon be lost as other postings are made, it will go down the list and eventually will get lost.

I need help on hotel... dunno which on to select as I prefer the hotel to be near to Nanjing road but not so expensive... help...:)

Re: Shanghai General

Sorry,I'm not much help on this one but I will relate what I know. We stayed in two hotels, one upscale, $700RMB a night, nice with breakfast buffet. The one I would recommend is the Bo Xue Lou Hotel No. 1859 Hua Shan Road, Xuhui Distric 8621-62825500. It is 40 minutes by subway to Nanjing Road though. It is basic, one elevator, no doorman, etc and $300 RMB per night. Very close to the subway, great eating spots across the street, debit machine, huge malls nearby and off the main road were really good bargains in the smaller shops. It has free internet as well.

Sounds like you would like to do some shopping? Try the Pearl Center on Nanging Road. All kinds of things besides pearls and bargain hard for great deals.

Have a great time.

Oops. I think I got email from you but your member name threw me for a loop and I deleted the message without reading it, thinking it was advertising.

Travel Tips for Shanghai

Construction

by rabbit06

Coming from the construction industry, i could not beleive that this 24/7 operation is getting the job done! Concrete mixers never stop and by the look of them never get washed, the local contractors using bamboo scaffolding ( osh NZ would throw the book at them! ) But what progress!

Huge Mall with Asian Brands

by nomadig about Grand Gateway

Grand Gateway is another of those malls that requires superlatives for the description. It's conveniently located next to the Xujiahui metro station on line 1. The entrance from the metro opens to a huge hall ten stories high, lined with shops selling everything and between.

Most of the shops are not so well known brands for an average Westener, but one can make good finds. There is also an Apple store, but its a sort of a bummer as it turned out to be a clothing shop.

As usual, there is several restaurants on the top floor. The Japanese restaurant with the sushi robot has good food with decent prices.

You have to try the dumplings!!

by rabbit06 about Din Tai Fung

A very high standard, superb service, great atmosphere, local cuisine specialising in dumplings along with all the local dishes and beers!! Have to say these dumplings were delicious along with the beef dish, as always this arrived on the table when we dinned for some strange reason??? ( kiwi man...lol )

Jing'an Temple

by shanghai-schwoab

The two-storey pagoda structure of Jing'an Temple stands opposite Jing'an Park. Its freshly painted, maize and burnt sienna exterior belie her origins from 247 AD. As the oldest shrine in the city, the locals regard Jing'an mire highly than the tourist favorite Jade Buddha Temple. The former was the site for China's first Buddhist organization in 1912, then during the Cultural Revolution, it was converted into a plastics factory. In 1983, the building was relocated and reverted to its religious functions.
