Has Xiangyang market moved?
by Fionaofarabia
As frequent shopping visitors to Shanghai, we have heard that the Xiangyang Makrte in Huai Hai Lu has moved. Could anyone please confirm this for me, and if it has moved, do you know where? This is one of our major shopping highlights in Shanghai!!

Hi there,
It's true they closed down the market. There is a smaller version of the market on 580 Nanjing W road. Check out the market on Qi Pu Road, that's where al the locals shop, it's cheaper and you don't hear: "Hello, CD-DVD-Bags-wathes" every 5 sec...

Xiangyang market closed, half of the vendors moved to the Ya Tai Sheng Hui Market, it located in the technology museum metro station of Line 2, please look for it in my shanghai travel page for detailed information.

Yes, the last official day of Xiang Yang market was June 30th of this year. Stalls there are scattered all over the city now, some in Qipu Lu, some are near Long Hua temple, some are in the Yu Garden and some in Nanjing W. Road.

Honest John's correct. The new market is at the science and technlogy museum subway station. The other places mentioned do have some small stalls, but by far the largest and most like XiangYang is at the metro station. You won't miss it if you get off from the metro.
It's inside though with glass fronted stall, and air-conditioned. A lot better than Xiangyang actually.
Travel Tips for Shanghai
Packing List

Depending on how long you are staying it would be easiest to take one large piece of luggage. This makes it easier to move around, especially if you have to switch hotels. Also, I would bring a universal adapter and plugs for things like your computer, shaver, etc.
Subway in Shanghai
by meteorologist1
The subway system in Shanghai is fairly convenient. The subway cars are all pretty new and air conditioned. There are currently 5 lines (as of summer 2006) and new ones are being built. The station at People's Square is the busiest. The subways are pretty crowded during rush hour, so stay alert to avoid being pickpocketed. Due to the extremely crowded conditions, some of the busy stations have glass screens installed on the platforms for safety (see picture). Although subway transfers are free (like in other cities), I suggest transfering as little as possible between lines, because you will have to walk through a lot of tunnels and climb up and down for the transfer -- the platforms for different lines are built unusually far apart at a station. The fare depends on the distance travelled and ranges anywhere from 3 to 8 yuan. The tickets can be bought at a ticket window or from a ticket vending machine. You scan the ticket card on the touchpad upon entering, and it is collected by the turnstile upon exiting.
a treat in the middle of the city

I've been to Shanghai at least once a month in the past year but only visited the Museum recently for the first time, depending on what you're into, it may take you an hour to a day, I love the sculptures as well as the section with the arts & crafts from the minority tribes
Jinmao Building...

... is the neighbor of the Oriental Pearl Tower in Pudong.
You can even choose to have a view of the city from the Pearl Tower or from the 88th floor of this building.
Here the building view from the Pearl Tower.
Pearl Oriental Tower (Night-time Skyline views)

"A mesmerizing view of a modern and developing city"
Shanghai at night is a dazzling light show not to be missed. The multi-colored lights glowing underneath the night sky reflects the vibrancy and growth of this busy metropolis city. As one peers out towards the skyline, the building lights truly demonstrate the density of activity down below. From the observation deck, it almost feels surreal from the solitude of being so far up inside the Pearl Oriental Tower.
"The Bund and city along the Huangpu River"
The amber row of lights along the Bund shines the nostalgic feel of an era long past still lingering among the city streets.
