Hi all. Am really interested in visiting Shanghai after visiting Beijing this past year. Would really appreciate any help from VTers.
1. Price from $30-$50us(flexible on this if this is too cheap)
2. Would like to be able to walk to drinking establishments in the evening(with preferences being casual pubs, lounges etc, not nightclubs) Best that maybe there is a choice of watering holes in area. Also, live music would be great! Not crazy about fancy lounges in 5 star hotels. Too sterile! Maybe somewhere I can meet with mix of locals and expats.
3. Would like area to be interesting to poke around during the day; whether that be some shopping or siteseeing.(of course restaurants too)
4. Would like it to be near metro as I wish to visit the market at the Science Technology stop on line 2.(new market is located there?)
Thanks in advance.
City Hotel in the French Concession is a nice hotel with a pleasant lounge/cafe reading area with lots of magazines and books; plus they offer some great deals online, with the fifth night free (about $49 a night); it is fairly close to a metro and if you walk either south (French Concession area) or north (up Shanxi), you will find some interesting watering holes; the Boona cafe is an amazing cafe with ambience, good food and coffee and a small amount of liquor for sale...my favorite cafe in the world right now. Also, Parker's is a wonderful bookstore with the best travel books, and a cafe. Also, there is a fabulous hostel right in back of the Marriott ...it is so charming. Located in a central location, too.

Shanghai Train Station is HUGE! Perhaps most train stations in China is huge. There are speed train services from Shanghai to Beijing leaving every evening at about 7pm. I think there are a hand full of services each day departing from Shanghai Station 7 minutes apart from each other. The train ride takes about 10-12 hours and make no stops in between the 2 cities. It is expensive but worth it. The train is air-conditioned and clean.
along Nanjing Road.... but far off the bund, a local treat where you find lots of old folks clad in white coats and white caps, busy filling the skin with paste made of meat-crab meat and crab egg. Terribly yummy although the decor - hmhmh...not the best. Downstairs is cheap like canteen style, you pay for tokens and then queue to order. The only thing I like here was the crab meat xiao long pao and also the soupy wantan. Other stuff - forget it. Prices cheap downstairs, cost triple upstairs where you are served by terribly impatient waitress.
The Yu Yuan Bazaar shopping complex with its faux Ming-Qing Yangtze Riverstyle buildings was constructed in l994, and today is one main draw for locals and tourists. Packed to the brim - it may get really crowded especially on holidays and weekends.
Shops and restaurants aplenty to amuse you as long as you don't mind the fakeness of it all and the swirling crowd around you.
In China there are a lot of new buildings, and they are working on more and more, bridges, roads, flats, underground etc .... They work all day and all night without stopping, 24 hours, they work harder during the night using big focus during the night. They work fast for bounties, the faster they work, the more money they earn. I went for a walk in Shanghai and I was very surprised to see such activity at night. I saw more people working in the night than during the day. In Shanghai they where building the big towers in the riverbank of the Yellow River and the underground.
