Antiques Market
by nepalgoods about Dongtai
Even though I have not been to Shanghai in the last 10 years, so I am getting good informations form our clients. This Dongtai Antiques Market was very much recommended to me.
This market has hundreds of stalls and many permanent shops along a short lane Dealers specialize in antiques, curios, porcelain, furniture, jewelry, baskets, bamboo and wood carvings, birds, flowers, goldfish, and nostalgic bric-a-brac from colonial and revolutionary days (especially Mao memorabilia). When it rains, most stalls aren't open, but the stores are. Open daily from 9am to 5pm.
Fresh, light and tasty!

The restaurant had recently been awarded by the most read english magazine in Shanghai called 'That's Shanghai'. If you are ever in Beijing, pick one up here too 'That's Beijing' of course! So hanging behind the counter is the certificate framed! the waiters and waitresses all wear suits and look very stern! But do smile a little..don't ask for too much though!
There are two menus, one in Chinese and English, and one solely in Chinese. Of course the latter one is the cheapey one, and the one that most foreigners cant read so of course they turn to the more expensive menu.....hhhhhmmm... the restaurant surely didnt get its plaque on the wall because people had been kindt ro one another!!!!
In my opinon it is a little over the top with some of the prices following toute suite. It looked like half the people siting or waiting for tables couldn't have afforded to come here.....so why did they ?.Oh!!!! The food was great, the service excellent and we were in and out so very quickly! Well we had five or six different dishes just between the two of us, and they were all extremely tasty. We were only eating vegetarian food, but oh my goodness was it good!
My favourite must have been the aloe fruit salad in aloe fruit juice...or maybe it was the fried green vegetables, strips of tofu and other vegetables smeared in a honey sauce......mmmmm.....or it could have been the mango dessert and custard pastries we had at the end. I really cant decide!!!!!
Go to Shanghai Museum - it is...

Go to Shanghai Museum - it is possibly the most organised museum in China - and best of all - lots of English and audio recorders to guide you around. Most of museums in China are badly organised even though they have a huge treasure of stuff but this is the best. You will need to spend at least 3 - 4 hours going from floors to floors.
If you look atthe exhibition rooms, they are named after the donors. Much of the historical stuff, painting, object d'art are donated by serious collectors, and mostly are Overseas Chinese...chinese who left the country during the revolution and made it big in their new homes. They acquired many of those paintings, furniture, and ceramics, and some are donated by their children in memory of their late fathers.
The shops at the museum downstairs is also very good - nice souveniers.

"Careful"
Shanghai is a very nice city , fast moving but changing very fast I would advise you to stay away from agents who help you get massage and sex as they would easily extract out a min of 200 to 400 RMB from you.
