You can get a taxi in Shanghai to bring you anywhere you want, but it is costly and dangerous. Chinese taxi drivers drive like c hinese taxi drivers everywhere. They don't realize that they can die. Also their cars are often not good enough for a long trip.
I recommend in this order.
1. Find a plane going to Nanjing, You will be at the airport and flights are reasonable, considering you will have to taxi to shanghai and maybe wait in a hotel!
2. Take the train. Pay for what they call soft seat. It is a nice 3-4 hour ride to Nanjing.
3. Take a bus, never tried this.
4. Taxi

What I would do:
(1) Take a taxi to the Shanghai Sightseeing Bus Center, under the south side of Shanghai Stadium, in south central Puxi (at Caoxi Bei Lu and Zhongshan Lu). Fare: about 160 yuan. Time: about an hour.
(2) Take a motor coach from the SSBC to Nanjing. Fare: 80 yuan. Time: about four hours.

Hi, Deni!!!
Thanks for the "Sexy" acknowledgment. Glad you picked up on my better qualities without having met me.
Also, glad you made it from KL (whatever that is -- must be someplace in Myanmar where you could've been shot!!!) to Nanjing. Taxi from SH would have cost you a million dollars. Buses are not always safe and often don't stop to let you pee. Bad for the kidneys if you don't get smashed while overtaking three other buses at once. Train is best.

Chinese Painting..

Chinese painting,a national fine art of China,is celebrated for its long history and distinctive styles.It emphasizes the execution of lines by brush strokes without and perspective limitation in subject expression,thus initiating a special painting system in the world fine arts.
Shanghai Metro System.
by Guantanamera
The Shanghai Metro System is quite modern and user friendly with English and Chinese signage except in the ticket area... For some reason, the ticket area subway maps and instructions are only in Chinese... Probably, they intend to upgrade those soon as both the Beijing and Guangzhou metro systems have... In this photo, Emily (VT member simcard) poses alongside one of the trains at People's Square metro station...
One of the TOP Museums in the World
by Radiomom
The Shanghai Museum will probably be on any tour which includes Shanghai. We found it to be one of the best museums in the world, in terms of presenting antiquities from ancient China. The building itself is wonderful. It is just about the right size to "scan" all the floors in about two hours, but do try to decide where you want to spend the most of your time. The furnishings exhibit is stunning, and also the ceramics -- if you've visited places where you've seen ancient Mayan or Inca art you will recognize similar styles and themes from the same periods of Chinese history. My favorite floor presents Buddist art, and it is extraordinary. It is rather harrowing to think that the cultural past was ignored for decades, and many of these treasures were likely packed away for many years.
Xi Hu : Heaven on Earth

"Ripping water shimmering on sunny day,
Misty mountains shrouded the rain;
Plain or gaily decked out like Xizi;
West Lake is always alluring."
~ Song Dynasty poet, Su Dongpo (960-1127)~
Xi Hu, meaning "West Lake" in Mandarin, was originally a shallow sea inlet. Due to the laying down of silt, this six square kilometres (1483 acres) of water became the famous West Lake. Considered one of the most beautiful sights in Hangzhou, this scenic lake is sheltered on three sides by hills, with open flat land to the northeast where downtown Hangzhou is located. The natural setting of strangely shaped peaks, serene forests and springs, dense foliage and a myriad of blossoms especially in springtime are enhanced by a treasury of sculpture and architectural features.
The National Silk Museum is the first Chinese national museum to be dedicated to silk culture and is the largest of its kind in the world. A similar museum is dedicated as homage to tea. Located at the West Lake Dragon Well Tea Plantation, the National Tea Museum provides a fascinating insight into the history and production of Chinese tea.

This is the best city in China to stay between jobs. There is everything a busnessman could want. If you are a tourist, there are not many ancient sites to visit, but it is close to the sites in Suzhou and Wuxi.
There is great shopping downtown near the Bund, The Yuyan Gardens or Xiangyang market. There is great food everywhere, and the nightlife just keeps getting better.
If you want tourist sites, go to Beijing, but if you want to live in a great city, go to Shanghai.
