Graffiti and other street art scene
I am trying to find out if there is any sort of a street art scene in Shanghai - and what would be a good neighborhood to check it out if there is such a thing.
This is the sort of thing I'm trying to hunt down: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hargadon/sets/72157594243517588/
Re: Graffiti and other street art scene
No. This is China and an authoritarian country. Street art is seen a vandalism and vandalism means jail.
Shanghai graffiti? You're just in time!
The graffiti scene in Shanghai used to only consist of mobile phone numbers colorfully spray painted on walls and sidewalks, which advertise certification services for migrant workers.
Times have changed!
A good neighborhood to check out modern variations of street art is west of the train station on Moganshan Road as well as at the notorious Century Park Metro station.
Graffiti on Shanghai's Metro rail system
Hey Paul2001! Looks like these vandals escaped from Shanghai Municipal Jail:
Behave thyself in COMMUNIST CHINA
Oh, dear me, I totally forgot this forum topic is about COMMUNIST China! Foolish Confucius; what was I possibly thinking? Apologies to the entire population of Maine.
Well, well, well; better not get too close to the local graffiti then; certainly don't want COMMUNIST China police chasing you down the street like Richard Gere's character in the Hollywood film "Red Corner"
Perhaps we should confine our graffiti art appreciation to the democratic boroughs of Northern Ireland or New York City. COMMUNIST China? Yikes!!
Travel Tips for Shanghai
Longhua Temple the...
Longhua Temple the biggest and oldest temple in Shanghai. Its main hall and all other halls are stately and splendidly structured. The chiming of 'Longhua Bell' in the monastery is one of Shanghai's eight tourist attractions. The Longhua Pagoda is equally an imposing and splendid structure---with seven storeys, in octagonal shape, with upturned eaves, and the hanging bells on the eaves' corners. Longhua Temple at 2853 Longhua Road is an ancient monastery in the south of Yangtse River. According to legend, it was built in the Three Kingdoms Period. (242 A.D.) It keeps the seven-hall structure of the Buddhist 'chan' sect. The 'Longhua Evening Bell' in the monastery is one of the eight scenic attractions in Shanghai. The Longhua Pagoda standing opposite the monastery is a structure of seven storeyes and octagonal in shape. This elegant and exquisite pagoda is the relic of the Song Dynasty.
One Nice Night Spot
First time in Shanghai and my friend recommended me check out this place. Windows that night seemed to me like a mix spot of both expats and locals. Most people were at their working age. It was packed eventhough it was during the weekday. Cocktails were good. Music was good. People seemed to have fun. Casual. Polite. Dress up a little bit.
If you haven't tried Hot Pot, do yourself a favor.
Hot Pot is enjoyed by both locals and visitors to Shanghai.
You sit around a table that has it's own burner and a large soup pot, usually divided into mild (clear broth) and spicy ( dark red broth), which is placed in the hole at the table after you sit down.
Next comes a waiter with the cart holding all of the "make your own sauce" ingredients that include sauces, spices, and chopped cilantro. You use this sauce to dip the cooked meat (or veggies or tofu) into before you eat it.
Hot pot is basically a communal pot of soup heated over a gas fire. Raw meats, vegetables and herbs are thrown into the boiling broth to slowly cook before being plucked out with chopsticks and eaten.
There a variey of meat and vegetables that you can choose from, but our group seemed to enjoy the meats and tofu more than the veggies.
Also, be advised that if you aren't used to spicy foods, don't ask for too spicy a broth. My group consisted of seasonsed spicy-food lovers and we ordered "medium-spicy". Even so, we all paid for our decision the next day.
If you have never tried it, Hot Pot King will be the perfect introduction to Hot Pot. If you are familiar with Hot Pot, Hot Pot King is a little more pricey and touristy than you might care for. Beef, pork, and lamb in the spicy hot pot broth.
Also, the cucumber salad helped cool down the palate as I ate the spicy meats.
You'll have to take the ferry...
You'll have to take the ferry to cross over to Pudong, the 'new' Shanghai. That's where the Asian TV tower is located...you won't miss it, it's shaped like something from Mars. I'll post pictures soon. I'm not sure how to take the ferry but i'm told it's very quick and cheap. Pudong is execeptionally clean and quiet, and boasts some of the nicest architecture in Eastern China.
Touch Shanghai with me...
How amazing of this city !! very interesting for me...
I can't count how many people who walks pass me. It's too fast and too many of them in this place. I don't even have no space to stand and take any picture because it's too crowded. This picture is taken while i stand next to this girl's father. It might be the easiest picture which i can take because she is very close to my camera.
This family seems to be happy with father, mother and a lovely daughter like this girl.
How innocent of Chinese smile girl !!
I never thought that Shanghai will be big and beautiful city like this. Standing in high hotel next to the river is almost feeling like touching sky in Shanghai.
