My and my fiance are looking for romantic spot to stay 2 or 3 nights in January 08 in Shanghai (honeymoon trip). What you suggest under 100$ in downtown (the center to feel the city, but queit place) ?
Second option is staying at a hotel (sky-scraper) on last ground. Still under 100$ per night with beautiful view.
PLease help mi :-)
I would strongly suggest Old House Inn (http://www.oldhouse.cn).
Peace Hotel perhpas. Not sure how much the rooms are.
Peace Hotel is currently under renovation, not sure if it would be open by then.
I'm pretty sure that it would be >100 USD for a room though.
Check out the Heng Shan Moeller website http://www.mollervilla.com/en/main.asp
This will probably be over $100, but this is a beautiful 1930's mansion that has been converted into what I would call a bed and breakfast type hotel. The location is excellent and the hotel is stunning! I have an article on my page about high tea at this hotel http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1e4db/f4fc8/4/ and you can see it next to this picture of the City Hotel http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1e4db/f4fc8/3/.

As a common understanding, Shanghai has the most colorful night life in China. But if you have ever participated, you may feel it is probably the most colorful one in the world!
The following are the main sections where the nightlife concentrates.
Xin Tian Di
It is a great success of combing the ancient architecture with the modern life. Xin Tian Di displays a comparatively traditional Shanghai architecture called Shi Ku Men. But walking into all those newly built-up, you find everything modern, western and trendy. There is a great conclusion for two kinds of people whom like to be here: The one likes to look at or the one likes to be looked at. So VTer, which type of person you are? ;-)
Fu Xin Park
It took me and my friend almost one hour to find Park 97(ranked as the best bar in China now) as it is located in the most inner side of the park. But be awared of the price. They charge us 50RMB for the entrance and a Gin Tonic for 54RMB. Another bar next to Park 97 is Guan Di as many Chinese celebrities go there often. The best Karaoke house Cashbox(Qian Gui) is also located inside of the park. So this park has it all! But it is no longer a park as all vechicles drive in by jetting out the poison and polluting the whole park during the night.
Mao Ming Road
I have not been to this area. But it looks like a local style to enjoy the nightlife.
Hen Shan Road
It's my favorite place to get involved with nightlife. It was the hottest place before Xin Tian Di. It seems lossing its attraction right now. But still my favorite place since it shows a more natural and real Shanghai taste. Taking an afternoon walk on Hen Shan Road is the most joyful thing, with all the noise scattering away from you, with all shades covering upon your head, with little people passing by you. Probably it's the best Shanghai life. Whatever you like.
This very famous restaurant was a real pleasure to dine at after a stroll around YuYuan Garden offering many of the local dishes such as the fresh River Fish, Crab, Eel, Lotus Root etc and the Dumpling!
We were lucky enough to have an upstairs private room with fantastic service by two waitresses!
They even had a pic of President Bill Clinton and Hillary on the wall when they dinned here! I enjoy the local dishes and have to say most of them! plus the beef!
I'd recommend seeing the modern Shanghai Museum. It's airconditioned for one, plus the exhibits are quite historical and interesting.
This facility also has wheelchair ramps and elevators for the handicapped.
I visited Shanghai only briefly during a talking tour of China in February 2004 (not to be confused with "walking tour" which would be far too energetic for me!).
I was there for only a few days with just one day for sightseeing. It is a big ultra-modern city but I look forward to returning some day.
I had the most fantastic "hot fish" dish in a Szechuan restaurant (fish swimming (not literally) in a sea of chillis)
My Chinese host insisted I have my photo taken to prove that I was actually there.
This was taken a couple of streets back from the Bund. It does look quite picturesque but you do have to be careful that a big red M doesn't sneak in among all those red lights.
Answers on a postcard....
